One thing I realized recently when getting represented to shops I’ve never worked with before is that because my rate is on the higher end, I sometimes get turned down and the client will often choose a cheaper option instead, despite I may be “a strong fit” and “client loves your work”. I wonder if it’s actually because I’m too expansive or just an easy excuse? Also feel like my rate seems to cap at certain level and will be hard to keep raising it in the future - any thoughts around this?

Out of curiosity, what’s the rate you’re asking for? I do feel we cap out at a certain point without a lot of extra prestige or personal connections.

What level?

When you say ‘client’ do you mean agency? As a freelancer at an agency you’re not getting picked by the client. You’re getting picked by the ECD or equivalent.

Yes client = agency booking me cuz they’re the client of the recruiters that represent me

Which recruiters do you use?

Do you have the same rate for every job you get asked about? Are they all the same level of creative? For instance I don’t charge the same rate if it’s obviously just design or senior AD work vs. if I’m coming in to CD a team on a whole production.

Why are you using third-party recruiters to represent you? That’s like shooting yourself in the foot. 🦶

I don’t know who needs to hear this (mostly As, Cs, SCs, and some Ms) but here goes.

You are important to the project, but never so important that you cannot leave the project or firm for better opportunities. Being in hero mode is good where you save the day, everyday - but in fact that is neither advisable for your progression nor a recommended practice for the firm. If you have been performing and have had decent social skills, you will not have burnt a bridge when you leave.

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…

So, this is a little awkward, but I recently moved to SD for a fresh start, and honestly, I love this city. My problem is I have been more of a homebody since I moved here and I'm a little intimidated to go out and meet people because I don't feel like I fit in here. I am overweight and this city is full of active, and attractive people. I guess I am wondering what my experience would be if I got out more? I feel like people look at me when I'm in public because I stand out due to my size.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?
