How much are you making as a legal assistant?! 2700 hours is ridiculous...
A7 - I’m not at S&C.
Are you given overtime pay? I was when I was a V5 legal assistant way back and I think my bonuses were pretty nominal. Either way though, 2700 hours is crazy. If you all are working this much, they need to hiring additional legal assistants.
Yes, we are given overtime! That is how they incentivize people to take the job. Now that we’re here, and nobody on our 6-person team works less than 2,500 hours, I agree that it’s past time for more assistants to come onboard, and for those of us who have kept the ship afloat to get a bit of recognition from the firm.
Absolutely not normal. You need to be compensated for all your work. 2700 hours is insane and probably unhealthy. Make them pay you for it.

I was a legal assistant at Cravath. Take your lunch breaks. I made about $65k working that much too! I learned a lot. I was tired. I didn't go back after law school but did venture instead.
You can say no. You can say, "Im not available this evening." You are not getting paid what associates are getting paid!
Paralegal bonuses are paltry. Just pay yourself by working OT. The bonuses for firms that have LA programs are so low as to be insulting.
If you want to fix this, go to a partner you trust. Tell them you are on pace for X and struggling to make ends meet.
No, that's not normal. You should at least be getting a prorated bonus for the portion of the year you were there.
Do you have a billable target for bonus consideration?
Makes sense. I won’t meet the full hours goal (on pace for about 1850 from last week of April through Dec. 31, which equates to about 2750 if my math is right).
A first year associate at my firm with 2700 hours would make $100,000 in bonus as a first year. Now you’re only a LA but still, no bonus for basically working more than some associates is absurd. I hope you milked overtime as best you could.
What firm?
You’re on track for 2700 working hours/year or 2700 billable hours? Just questioning bc if month 1 was billed at 40, then that’s not a track for 2700 billable hrs. If it’s 2700working hours, that’s still A LOT of time in the office (averaging 11-12hrs every single work day), but since you’re being paid overtime, then you may actually be compensated fairly, but they def need to add staff bc that schedule isn’t sustainable. If it’s truly 2,700 billable hours, then gtfo. That’s not sustainable now or later when you have your degree so what’s the point… go make your connections at a firm where you could actually see yourself living your post-degree life.
The way our L/A billing structure works, we bill everything we work on, then partners chop it down for the clients. It’s as you stated - 11-12 working hours, and usually a few hours on the weekends. I’m not sure what proportion of the hours would be “billable” as an associate, but I’d have to guess at least 80%, if not higher, as we never have lunch breaks or any time to get out of the flow.
