Passed the bar last month and became an Associate at the firm I’ve been a law clerk at since 2L. It sucks. I’m getting no work, no mentoring, or guidance. How soon is it too soon to start job hunting? My boss paid for my bar prep and my law clerk salary while I studied and I feel indebted to him but I dread every day and not sure if it’s better to just jump ship now and start clean somewhere else

Give it at least a few weeks. Be polite but vocal - keep requesting work and it’s also very important to ask if there are non-billable things you can do. In our profession work can come in fits and starts, so you might just be starting in a slow few months. Offer to write a few articles for the website to show initiative.

It gets better. This happened to me too. You just have to stick it out and the work will pick up. A lot of people don’t know exactly what to give you yet because you’re so new/fresh. Make sure you’re reaching out to the friendlier partners to make sure they know you’re available and anxious for work.

like

My firm doesn’t deal well when associates leave. Every single associate that has left for a new job has never been allowed to stay for 2 week notice-they ask them to leave that day. Partners take it all very personally (Small firm)

like

Consider that work may be slow due to Covid and take the opportunity to learn anything that you can, even if you do not have casework. Remember the people who helped you along the way, but business is business. You can feel free to look around for a new job, but how much do you value the relationship with your boss? Are you willing to stick it out until things get better? Are you willing to add value to the practice in other ways? I think this relationship is important. Your firm gave you an opportunity, paid for your bar and gave you a job. Nurtured you actually. Jumping ship would be poor form. Remember, these folks may have to give you a reference. Give it some time.

For what it’s worth, I started at my firm in November after passing the bar and did not see substantive work until late January. I was so bored and worried about not hitting billing targets. Now I’m absolutely swamped (and wishing I could go back!) It takes time for people to come to the realization that you’re there and available for work. And things really do go in fits and starts. Give it a few more months. And if you’re feeling there’s no guidance or mentoring, seek out someone and ask them to be your mentor. Most people are more than willing!

like

I second this. I don’t think I’ll be meeting the billable target this year since there’s no work.

Being open mind and optimistic is important. And you shouldn’t rush out. But if you can see the writing on the wall that this is not a fit, you don’t “owe” anyone anything. Assess your value in the market. Assess the options before leaving. When you make a decision to move on, be authentic, and if the boss is a good person, no bridge will be burned.
This is YOUR life and YOUR career.

Was in this position and two years later the associate who replaced me still says there’s no work because satellite office of big firm. If the facts are similar I would start looking now.... my experience it will take at least 6months to get another job that meets most of your criteria. In the meantime you can see if the work situation improves but don’t sit around idle on your off hours-job hunt!
