You can sue anyone you want. Doesn’t mean you’re going to win. It’s not illegal to lay someone off because your firm doesn’t have enough work to employ you. Your employer can fire you for any reason, or without reason, provided it’s not based on your status as a protected class as defined in federal or state law.

OP, you signed a contract that is almost assuredly an ‘At Will’ employment. You can’t sue D for letting you go due to market conditions.
Stop thinking the world owes you something.

Good luck with that SM1
That's a very American reaction. The rest of us don't go there as often.

Canada would like a word with you.
Had a bullying boss once ask me to compare two black workers and say who had the darker skin (in front of them). Another incident asked me to raise a fist and say “White Power” in front of them, as they discussed the Beyoncé super bowl show. She was actively keeping records on my mistakes. Lawyer said forget about it. After that my faith in justice and the law was kaput.
Well, D1, not all firms are created equal. I was not protected, and one of the two women I was asked to compare (I refused) quit two weeks after I left because she couldn’t handle it either.
It’s legally easy to sue someone. Financially it is difficult because lawyers cost money.
