Prior O-3’s: what was your starting salary for your first job out and what was the role? I’m entering salary negotiations soon and want to make sure I’m not cutting myself short.

I would’ve loved to see this thread prior to my initial offers.

Big D offered 115k + 5k bonus for a C in their human capital practice.

PwC offered 129k + 15k bonus in their C&D practice.

like

I thought so too! Still questioning if the PwC offer made financial sense vs mba route. Ideally I will make the same amount as a recent mba grad in two years, but those new employment reports are looking great.

Got out as an E5 with a clearance. First offer was $140k as a contractor working at a 3 letter agency. Did that, decided to get out and go to college. First offer after college was $95k in 2018. Now making $180k base/$225k total comp.

Good luck out there, just don’t forget that companies pay you for your experience and competence, not your rank.

I left as an SC (up for manager) making 125k for a clients competitor for a year and a half and came back as a Manager. My offer was $165k with a $10k signing bonus, but I negotiated up to the $180k range (exact number withheld to prevent talent from finding me 😂) and roughly double the bonus.

I tried twice. First time was applying to a different OP and service line through the official channels. Got slaughtered by a case study I had no expertise in, which is obviously bad at the Manager level.

Waited two months and tried again through my network and got hired back by my old PMD. Had a very serious conversation about coming back at SM, but ultimately >>> I <<< opted for Manager because I don’t know how to sell and am not bringing a book of business with me. SM is very much so sink or swim and I wanted to learn to swim first.

You’re paid based on your role and location, not your former military rank.

A software engineer in Nashville won’t make as much as a software engineer in Silicon Valley. A manager at an Amazon warehouse won’t make as much as a manager for a software engineering team at Microsoft.

You won’t get an accurate estimate unless you tell us what kind of role your applying to and location.

When you say program manager I’m going to assume it’s non tech program manager and also not product manager.

Bay Area program managers should be looking at 150k - 200k TC if it’s Big Tech.

DC program managers should be looking at around 100k -120k. If you have a clearance and it’s Microsoft or Amazon, your TC will be higher since they offer separate bonuses for it.

Not sure about NYC and remote.

Same, but I was a SC in advisory.

10 years ago in DC $90-$95k for a big 4 / Booz role. Similar to GS13 with locality pay.

E4 here- went to school after getting med retired, got a PhD, first job out $130k+10% annual bonus

like

175k base / 15% bonus / ~100k stock per year plus some other incentives getting out as a junior O3.

That being said…I came from the academy with a stem degree, a technical MOS, and masters that I got on nights and weekends. I got LUCKY snagging this role and my peers are 5-8 years older than me. But it’s possible.

Haha I took a pay cut when I got out as an O-3 in 2009. I didn't know a damn thing about salary negotiation.

Hey Principal 1, sounds like me....joined Booz at about the same time for 95k

With major companies laying off tens of thousands of highly employable individuals, I feel like I’ll have to accept what I can get right now. I’m in the final round with two roles, but I’m not thrilled about either and I have a suspicion that the final offers will be about 100k base.

The 9-12 month requirement for officers to submit resignations really didn’t age well with time for me, I submitted in the middle of a RED HOT job market. Wish me luck 😅.

CA. But I’m basically applying in most major cities in the US that have decent weather

148k with a 20k signing bonus. Technical PM role in CA

I am looking to leave my current position due to not having the opportunity to run campaigns and earn experience.
However, every interview I get asked about the campaigns that I have run.
This is starting to feel like a closed loop. Any ideas are appreciated.

I do create some personal campaigns and do social media content on LinkedIn for my personal profile. That is why I get a high number of interviews but I stumble at the starting line.

Feeling grateful & proud as I reached my goal ($50K by 25) 5 months early. But I can’t help feeling a bit overwhelmed. In the lifelong scheme of things, $50K doesn’t seem like much. I worked really hard and sacrificed a lot (including mental health) to get to this but it seems a little tiring knowing I still have so long to go. I recently moved out and in with my BF so my expenses are split, but nonetheless they are still expenses. Any tips on continuing this journey and keeping the drive?

I'm a brand new attorney (passed the Feb 2021 bar) who started an in-house counsel position a few months ago (where my focus is negotiating agreements for the sale of my company's software). I was a contracts manager on an in-house team for 4 years prior, which is why I was able to go straight in-house. I'm entirely skipping out on firm life, which feels both good and bad. Is there anything I should think about getting experience in? How should I go about making sure I am seeing enough things?
