Without. I don't have it. I think the principles are good to be familiar with but most would not work well for our environment and the work we do.
While advisors say PMP cert looks good on resume,it doesn't inherently make you a better PM. In fact, I've seen PMP certified PMs getting the axe for not managing their projects properly and missing deadlines and failing to communicate.
It's not a bad credential to have, but the scope of knowledge required to have the certification is so broad that it's hard to apply in real life.
Better, but you have to be flexible and work in a way best to the team you work with. No flexibility = route to disaster
I would say the experience of going through the class and the exam are worthwhile even if it is difficult to apply the principles to your day to day work. I have found that I found myself asking better (and more) clarifying questions. It helps to shape your thinking. With that said, fortunately, Razorfish paid for my class and exam. If I had to pay for it, I would probably wait.
Obviously, it won't help with your proofreading though.
I have been debating whether to get the certification. Havas will pay for classes up to a certain cost and that's the only reason why I'm considering it. I think it a nice to have vs need to have.
Love love love having PMs
PM adds legitimacy for your clients and future employers. Definitely doesn't add to experience or make you a better PM, but it opens doors and bumps salary. Definitely worth doing, in particular if your company will pay for part of the prep courses or exam.
