Yeah be a senior ad or cw, go freelance, call yourself a CD, get hired as a CD. I saw a pair do it just the other day
Getting promoted too early can be a career killer. I’ve seen more bad examples than good when it happens. There’s a lot to be said by being battle tested. I’ve seen some brilliant young talent get destroyed because they weren’t given the time to grow.
I was sort of promoted too early imho. From AD to ACD was fine as I still just concepted for the most part. From ACD to CD was rough. Suddenly I ran multiple accounts and for the first time in my career, I started questioning myself. I’m doing all right, not complaining (and the money is nice), but looking back I would probably choose a different path today. It is a massive jump going from concepting to dealing with CMO’s and board rooms.
@Copy: When you are young and in jr. levels you’re expected to learn, grow and fail. Test and learn. When you move up the ranks you are expected to know and deliver. Certain mistakes are just not tolerated any more. I’ve seen bright stars get destroyed because like AD said above they get in front of a CMO and instead of sounding seasoned they come off as young and immature. Nothing hurts your career more than when you fail with a senior title in front of big clients.
So let those stars shine for a while. Then reward them. Most of the time it’s their managers fault for putting them in that situation.
Happened to me after winning a truck load of awards. Mid to ACD.
Not gonna happen unless you bring in business or do something extraordinary
I’ve seen it happen. Almost everybody believes it was for the optics.
A mid level writer was promoted to ACD after selling a Super Bowl commercial that turned out to be successful.
I think senior to CD is not uncommon. Usuallly they're a senior for a while, though.
Agree with the comment above re: promotion too soon and it killing a career. I've seen it a few times.
I went from AD to ACD but after moving to a different agency
Cool. That’s pretty much what I thought! Shocked it even came up
I’m a junior or junior/mid, but have a couple of smaller agencies recruit me for Senior Copywriter openings. Awards definitely key for that to happen.
I’m kind of jumping from junior/mid to mid/senior but I had another offer to jump to senior
What do you mean by killing a career? As in they can’t stand up to expectation of them or...?
I went from jr to senior, but I went in-house and was the only writer.
