How do people stay motivated when they’ve already hit their billable goal (year ends Dec 31)? I still have projects piling up I can’t get myself to do.
Just received an email the other day giving all staff an OT requirement for June.. kind of hard to get that many billable hours in when none of the work is available 🙄
Same day cancellations? I’ve been freelancing at agency in a mostly full time capacity for a few months. Working remotely, billing hourly. They are very particular about billable time and nitpick downtime. The budget has been cut and hour reduced. I requested a schedule so we can all plan accordingly. Now I “show up” in the morning and am told there is no work. I would normally bill for 4 hours but they insist they don’t guarantee hours. I don’t even know how to respond anymore. Suggestions?
Can anyone who works close to billing speak to the rationale behind why vacation days aren’t billed 8.0 per day, and why they don’t count toward an associate’s billable hours?
Anyone else find it INSANE that PTO does not count towards your billable hour requirement. If you take a week off (40 hours), you’re really not getting paid time off if you have to make up all of that billable time before the end of the year. Am I missing something or is that just absurd?
Hi everyone, my firm (V100) is hiring a midlevel L&E associate for its SF office. Pay is market and billable hours requirement 2000. Please dm me if you’re interested.
so, how many firm laptops' worth of billable time would you say you waste in a given month dealing with delays caused by your firm laptop?
What does bench life look like for you? For me a typical day looks like this 9 am- sign in and check emails 930-11 : look for a new job 11-2 lunch and nap 2-3 : sometimes meetings, mostly begging people for billable work 3-4:30 - proposal work if I have it or more job hunting 5-9pm family time and dinner 10-3am - netflix, videogames, cry myself to sleep
Have you worked a reduced schedule (80 or 90% billable hours)? Any unexpected downsides? I was recruited and got a reasonable offer last week. It's the same money I currently make. Standard move is to counter with higher pay. But I decided I want more time, not more money, so my counter offer is to reduce the billable quota by 10% instead of raising the salary offer. I'm in no hurry to move so I figured the worst they can say is no, and I'm no worse off than before they called.
It seems partners are much more flexible with associates who have kids than with those who don’t. If it’s okay for my colleague with a kid to leave at 5 pm and log on later, why isn’t that the same for me (no kids)? My obligations might be different, but I still have a life and want to be able to do certain things, like catch that evening workout class or cook dinner for my partner. As you can probably tell, my firm is operating 100% in person. There is no point here — I’m just whining.
Do any firms give you “billable time” equivalent for taking vacation or time off? I think it’s kinda scammy that firms offer “unlimited pto” but still expect you to meet your hours without giving any hours equivalent for that PTO time you took. In reality, you’re not really taking PAID time off because you’ll have to make up those hours at some point in the year anyway.
Question for Junior Associates, particularly from smaller firms (2-10 lawyers), Outer Suburbia office-Initial Compensation for a 2nd year associate in Family Law/ID - $80,000 salary, retirement benefit of 10% gross income paid by Firm, 75% of health (dental & vision too) insurance premium covered, bar dues, CLEs and Malpractice Insurance covered. Additional bonuses discretionary, 1250 billable hours expected - Fair or not? If not (again a firm 2-10 lawyers), why not? (DC/Baltimore Suburbs)
Seeking some candid advice: I am relatively new to the legal community (roughly 1.5 years). I work in insurance and I first believed my frustrations/dissatisfaction involving my current role stemmed from my inability to effectively capture my time, especially when my 10-15 hour days (and long weekends) would produce minuscule results. After consulting with my external legal community, I turned my billable hours around (virtually overnight). (continues in comments)...
In your experience, how accurate has the Robert Half Salary Guide been? Small law in LCOL area. Fourth year associate trying to figure out appropriate salary range. I’ve heard the 1/3 of your billable time value as well? Any guidance appreciated.
Opportunity to pivot from Insurance Defense PI to Plaintiffs-side PI for almost 30k salary bump. If you generally like the people you currently work with would you do it? Obviously no billable hours doing Plaintiffs PI but I cant imagine their work day being any less stressful or the performance demand any less than on the defense side, especially if they are offering more money. Money is def a consideration for the move.

How to react when an MD asks the only woman in the meeting (me) to ping someone to ask if that person is still joining the meeting? He could have done it himself...

Why do people talk to you on 6 AM flights?! Like no. My headphones are in. I maybe got 2 hours of sleep. Leave me alone.
Recruiter just pinged me from Parthenon (EY acquisition) with an interview offer anyone heard anything about them? I'm a BA at Deloitte right now.
For those of you who are engaged/married - do you wear your engagement ring to work? I got engaged over the break, and feel like wearing my ring to client site might not be the best idea.
I am interviewing tomorrow at Gartner for a Senior Consultant role in Canada. Does anyone know about the work culture in Gartner Consulting and their salary range for a Senior Consultant.
