Quarter-life crisis has me completely checked out at work….any ideas/options?

-1 year audit experience at Big 4
-3 years accounting advisory experience at another Big 4
-Will make manager January 2025
-Already have CPA, based in CA

I’m good at accounting, but hate it and much rather go into something relationship based like sales, or true consulting. Open to pivots into finance but feel like if I wait until manager I’m pigeon-holed into accounting/finance manager roles.

Grass is ALWAYS greener. I was in more “traditional” consulting is just monotonous power point slides. Finance is just sheets + slides and accounting is just sheets (mainly). Maximize income and find a hobby, leave big4 when able life is better, but all work is work

I would say you are early in your career and have great experience. Make manager and then look for a different role. If you end up missing or regretting it you can easily come back. It gets harder to make that exit the longer you stay. I’ve hated it since I made manager and by the time I was ready to do something about it my pay and life were so built up that making a move feels impossible. I wish I had tested the waters when I was in a position to do so.

GT1 OP said they are making manager in January 2025, that’s not far away. If it was me I would get my ducks in a row. Start the process and leave after I get the title so if I wanted to come back I could come back at that title with less arguments. Seems like when you are that close why not wait a couple months.

That said, if an opportunity came up I certainly wouldn’t turn it down to stay for the promotion.

1099 or w-2 ? I have been given the option though the company prefers w-2. It’s a day rate booking couple of months or more (no end date). I already have 1099 from similar company this year and am leaning towards 1099, but I don’t want to be difficult. I do take home office deduction and they are not supplying any equipment. Suggestions?

Or that I'm qualified). But long-term, knowing account roles are so much more plentiful than brand planning in PR, I'm wondering if I should start thinking about account.
