Question for my dog owners - tips/tricks to make it work while traveling? Looking to get a dog this summer. SO doesn’t travel but out of the house 10-12 hours per day. Is it feasible? Fair to the dog?

It’s absolutely not fair. It’s expensive but daycare is the only option you have without being cruel to the dog. I was in the same boat.

like

Daily walks are the minimum. They’re incredibly social animals

like

Completely unfeasible in my experience. I have a dog, but I also have a gf that works from home, only way it works.

like

Adopt a retired racing greyhound. They are crate trained and used to being confined for long periods. Low maintenance and surprisingly low energy. We've had 4 now. They take retirement seriously and sleep most of the day.

like

No. Dogs can get anxiety and depression too. Unless you’re willing to shell out $$$ for a good and engaging daycare, it’s better to wait for another job to get a dog.

Get a robot vacuum

I had a dog before I started in consulting. It’s not fair to him at all. Live with SO who can take care of him during the week and we have a walker. Also not fair to the SO

like

Same situation as PwC1. I would never get a new dog in this industry. That’s not fair. Wait until at least one of your schedule/job changes.

like

Dont do it. MAYBE do what Capgemini1 does

like

Wouldn't life just be better if we could take our dogs with us to the client site??? -sails back to unrealistic dream world-

like

Mostly driving. Home office was St Louis and client was in Kansas City

It depends. I’m more inclined to say no, but it depends on what breed and if you’re getting a puppy. Puppies need a lot of attention and care while they’re young so not the greatest idea to leave them for long stretches. Older dogs maybe ok

like

Daily walks are not enough. Imagine being stuck in a small space with nothing to entertain you for 5-6 hours at a time... especially as a puppy.

Daycare is the only responsible answer. They’re socialized, exercised, and cared for. Worth the money if having a dog is important to you.

like

My wife and are in a similar situation. We alternate having a walker M/W/F and then daycare T/Th

It’s doable - with a walker. It also depends on the dog and breed to be honest. I’ve had some dogs who are super high energy and needed the outlet / had to be crated when we were out so they couldn’t be left alone for that long, so would have had to use a daycare. We’ve also had quieter, more laid back dogs who by their own volition sleep most of the day and act more like cats. We use a walker, walk them ourselves for 30 mins morning and night (which equals being left alone for only 5-6hrs before a walk). So make the choice on breed /personality very carefully

Saints and BMD are actually great for apartments. While they are big they are typically lazy and don’t need much activity during the day. But you will need to make sure in the morning and after work that they are taken out and get a good long walk!

We do 2x wfh, 2x twice daily dog walks, and 1x daycare. Plus dog park in the evening and or weekend.

If you are gone most week why get the dog?

I’m fostering a dog right now that ended up being more long term than planned for. SO works away from home and comes home midday but I feel so guilty. I’d love to keep the handsome guy but I don’t feel like I could do it knowing he’s stuck in a kennel all day - good trial run I guess

About rolling off my project with no new project opportunity yet. I’m already getting anxious and can’t have a full night rest with the worry of not finding a project soon and eventually getting laid off. Six months ago a financial conglomerate offered me a position. The pay and benefits were really good so I took it. Now, I’ve realised this company is dangerously toxic so I deeply regret leaving the firm.

Past week my former manager asked me if I would have any interest in coming back so I said yes. Then she said she would have some conversations to test if it’s alright to bring me back in.

It’s been a week since we talked. Is it okay to reach out and ask for any updates?

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
