Question re: salary. I’m thinking about accepting an offer at a small (4-6 attorneys) transactional firm. I would primarily be working on NDAs for clients. The role sounds great (no billable hours, fully remote, flexible hours/ can work from anywhere); however, the salary is $70K. I’m a new attorney, with only one year of experience. Does this salary seem low? If so, any advice on what someone in my position should ask for?

HCOL or LCOL area?

As a first year attorney I took a position for $70k + discretionary bonus. Ended up at $83.5k for the first year and found myself grossly underpaid compared to the local IP market.

like

The firm is in Colorado. I’m in Texas. So, both are HCOL areas.

I’m on Orange County, CA and I’ve seen job postings that low but the range has been mostly 75-100k for small firms but some have billables. No billables is hard to find it seems.

like

Hmm. I think it is a good opportunity. It's rare to find no billables. Where are you based, OP?

A friend of mine got the same offer but his offer was 91k + 12.5k signing bonus. Difference is, he’s based in Chicago.

I’m fine with my offer now b

We are a firm of 5 transactional attorneys and the bonus structure is very unclear. The usual “based on personal performance and firm profitability” language. I wonder how this is calculated in general. What is the percentage bracket of the bonus? Assume it is a high performance 9+ year attorney and the firm is profitable (even with COVID). The based salary is low $120k. Firm is in Tx. I’d love to hear your comments.
