Questions for partners / senior associates on this bowl - as we have seen, juniors seem to be the easiest cuts to make to reduce costs as we are not yet at the stage where we really create value for the firm. What should we be doing to keep our jobs in this economy? So far, I’m showing up to the office, putting in extra hours, not turning down work, and being extra proactive with taking initiative. I’d really like to keep this job as I need to repay student loans / keep my work visa.

Taking initiative is a great way to make yourself a go to for seniors. I work with two juniors (rising third years, so not really juniors much longer) frequently. One takes ownership of saving documents to system, updating checklist before calls, immediately replying to me that they will take first pass at reviewing things that I will obviously ask them to (schedules, minor ancillaries, etc.). The other does not - literally does nothing if not explicitly asked and has no initiative / takes no ownership. I, along with everyone else, vastly prefers the first person. They get staffed first, they have better reviews. If someone between the two had to be trimmed, the decision is obvious.

A2, partners listen to seniors.

like

A few things:
- Release your time on time.
- Be extremely visible in the office. Don’t just go in and close your door. Walk the halls, build relationships, ask partners and senior associates if they have calls that you can shadow.
- Let people know when you’re slow, and be open to all kinds of work.
- Have a good attitude.

Really not different from my advice to juniors in boom times.

Chill. If you are on track for min hours that is good enough

like

You would be wrong. Peoplehitting min hours are massively profitable . Have you not been paying attention to people reporting 1200-1400 hour years on this bowl? Hours in that range from lack of work to go around is the entire reason layoffs are happening at all. If your hours are normal you are not at risk

This job is a lot better if you don't care about the bonus and hours requirement. I can pretty easily bill 1700 hours annually and my firm so far hasn't cared in the slightest. Worrying about hitting 2000 hours for the bonus used stress me out so much, and I just don't think it's worth it. Base salaries are ridiculous and way more than enough to finance my lifestyle.
