It's not just Ogilvy, it's basically every agency right now. Especially the big network ones. The grass is not always greener.
Welcome aboard a one way train filled with garbage, lies and mediocre talent.
@Design Director. Into in-house/brand/client side. Into Facebook, Google and Amazon. Into programmatic, algorithms and into A.I. Into smaller budgets, not having a AOR, having multiple smaller specialized partners. Into consultant companies hiring agency people and setting up their own "agencies". That's the big shift and it's happening now. The large network agencies are the first to really feel the impacts since their models and processes are not built for this. It takes time for those agencies to change but at least they are starting to do it.
@DesignDirector. So the things is that every industry is changing, more or less. The music industry was one of the industries that got this treatment first. There are not a lot of record shops left. But it evolved and streaming is now king, other means of producing and distribute music. Newspapers, media, banks, brick and mortar shops... Netflix killed Blockbuster. Amazon killed small shops and shopping malls. Advertising is being attacked from multiple angles and needs to reinvent itself. We need to faster, more flexible, less account heavy, less business and more creative (in my opinion). Big clients like P&G and Unilever are clearly pointing this out to us. Facebook and Google now accounts for 65% (!!) of U.S ad spend. Agencies are generally good at looking into a clients business, market and brand and I think it's time for us to look into our own market and business models and make some tough calls. A lot of agencies will die, some will live but none will be able to be business as usual.
The whole industry is shifting. Turning the ship around won’t be easy
O&M3, in these desperate times it has BECOME more toxic and political than most. Sad!
Not happy about it. I remember when it was great
Is ogilvy’s culture more toxic and political than most? Or industry standard? 😫
The problem is that the industry is free falling right now. That's why the reaction of non raises, political environments, layoffs etc. is happening. And it's the same in a lot of places. It's a huge shift happening in real time, right now.
In addition to incursions from Accenture, McKinsey etc & shorter CMO tenures which is leading to shorter agency relationships, and in addition to fewer agency-of-record relationships and more “projects” that end after 8 months, undercutting long-term staffing plans for agencies....in addition to all that, I think clients have caught on that giant holding companies don’t actually deliver any magic “synergies"
I hope we can turn things around
I agree SVP. I don’t think I am special. Mid life crisis or client side or smaller agency 🤔
OP, ah sorry and I feel you! I’m starting a new job next week at a small agency, coming from an IPG agency...super nervous but pumped! Hope you land somewhere that makes you happy if you’re ready to make the jump!
Agency shifting to what?
Can you explain what is happening?
@Ogilvy&Mather 1 what is the whole industry shifting to?
@SVP1 if all that is happening now. What will the agencies change to? And will it be better?
