If at some point it will be your daughter’s responsibility to maintain the car and get it serviced correctly and pay for unexpected repairs then no, don’t do it. You would be unfairly tying an anchor around her neck that she wouldn’t even know was happening.
If you’re going to pay for all repairs and prompt her to service it on time, then great. Get her whatever you want. And make sure to help her get into her next car when the mini inevitably becomes worth $6k as a trade-in
A 3-5 year-old used Mini costs more than $5-$6k I can assure you
They’re super cute. Except it’s a British manufactured German engineered car.
“Reliable and easy/cheap to maintain” are not words either of those counties know.
Get her a civic and be done with it.
Second this hahaha
As much as I love what the Mini Cooper offers in terms of style and fun factor, your friends are right—maintenance can get expensive, especially as these cars age. Minis are awesome to drive and the size is a huge plus for maneuverability, but repairs (think electrical issues, engine quirks, run-flat tires) can really add up, and parts aren't cheap compared to Japanese or domestic brands. If you find one with a solid maintenance history and low miles, it can be a great buy, but I’d budget extra for upkeep.
I personally don’t like them, but aren’t they owned by BMW? So, for one out of warranty, I should imagine any mechanic who could work on a BMW could work on a Mini.
Wrongo. The first step in any maintenance item for it is “drop the subframe.”
Had one. Loved driving it. Total PITA to work on. Changing the oil filter involves popping out the radiator expansion tank which WILL crack over time.
Got a Miata and never looked back.
My friend had one 10 years ago, hated everything about it and got rid of it for a camry
