At the risk of being banned for being unhelpful, I would respectfully argue that most agencies already have plenty of opinionated Sr Copywriters who are looking to skip middle management and want to tell the agency how things ought to be.
I would also respectfully argue there are enough creative directors who've skipped one too many levels too quickly, and their resulting fear of having to manage without any management ability leaves them all too quick to shoot down opinions offered by anyone.
The reality is many careers in advertising can be short. I love what I do, but I want to make sure my family is taken care of in the long term. Not trying be the cocky kid who thinks he knows best.
@sc1—yes. I just wrapped up an 8 month gig at an agency after being extended 6 times. Private clients are an option, too. I prefer working at agencies.
Do freelancers work for any length of time for agencies? I haven’t. Private clients is where it’s at.
Consulting like consulting or like freelance? Consultants have MBAs, generally.
No. You don’t need one because you can work in their ad agency-like objects within their consulting practice like PWC or Deloitte has. But if you work in those divisions, you arent considered a real consultant, just the worker bees that other 25 year old consultants boss around. I’ve done it on both sides of the fence and the grass is not greener. It’s actually full of manure
Generally, the difference between being a freelancer and being a consultant is about $150/hr. You have to be very good and have a fat address book of influential people at the agencies.
Don’t consultancies hire writers? I’m sure they want ones with agency experience too as they’re taking pieces of that business. You’ll probably get paid more too.
Can someone give an example of a private client in this context?
