I make just under $80K at mid-level. I pay $3275 + ~$55 for trash every month, split down the middle with one roommate. We live near USF.
Take home pay is $4178 a month, rent is $1664, so I spend 39% of my income on rent. If i was willing to live further away from the city (I’m not) or have more roommates (also a no), I could certainly keep it under 30%.
I’m at a junior level and had to negotiate so I could make 60k so I could afford my $1600 rent.
60k $800 3 roommates!
There’s an old thread that has a LOT of examples you should check out. 11% fwiw (my roommate is my landlord 🤷🏼♀️)
Any tips on finding a place? I’m going to have a small dog which makes things a lot harder ☹️
Went from $95K and $2,150 in rent for a 1bd in Brooklyn which took I believe took 51 or 55% of my monthly take home income for 2+ years. Completely unsustainable and tanked me financially. Accumulated massive cc debt. Miraculously snagged a 1bd for $900 in BK, now making $120K so it’s down to 14%, but will take a long long time to undo the damage. Hope my story and transparency can help others.
My daughter lived in Lower Pac Heights and paid $2500 for a studio. That’s what most studios were going for. There is a great article on Thrillist called “Which SF Neighborhood Should You Move To?” Funny and informative
Moved to LA and am now only spending 25%. It’s soooo much better.
It doesn’t. Best bet is to find roommates. But if you’re really wanting to to live alone, count on paying $2300+.
When I first started literally half of my income went to rent. It was so hard my first year. But I chose to live by myself in a studio. I didn’t want the Peter Pan Syndrome, reverting back to living like I was in college. I had a house before I moved to SF. And thankfully had savings to dip in. So needless to say it was a big shift.
Gradually I was able to get it down to about 38-40%. But even that wasn’t worth it. So I moved to the North Bay and got a 1BR for the same price as my studio. By the time I left the Bay Area I was able to save more and finally reached that 25-30% range.
It took 5 years, starting as an intern and moving up, to finally feel somewhat comfortable in SF.
Interesting. Everyone is paying less than I thought. I’m moving there very soon and was going to pay around $2500, sharing
@SAD1 Craigslist but don’t get scammed. See the place in person and don’t wire money
1br for $900 in BK? How far out are you?
@CW3 - Bensonhurst. 2 min walk from the N.
30 min to lower Manhattan.
Live with fiancé - we split a $3200 1bdr in the Richmond and pay about $50 each in bills a month. Comes out to 32% of my take home salary every month.
Following this thread
I left SF last year. This is what I paid.
Studio, $1200 in lower pac height, 90k salary.
$60K, my share is $1200 a month, 2 other roommates in two bath space.
@AD3 where do you live for that cheap??
1350/month for my half of a 1bd I share with my gf. 100k salary. That’s only 16% of salary but like 25% of takehome pay
Live with boyfriend - we split a $3300 1/br , so $1650 each. Which is about 25% of my salary. Previously was paying 2k for a teeny tiny studio before moving in w bf.
