Honestly, even as a FTE I feel like it is always on. There is no loyalty, and if you’re lucky raises barely keep up with inflation. The rule these days is up or out. Whether you give yourself a “soft” deadline of 1 yr or 2 or whatever is up to you. You never know, and unexpected opportunity or interview could turn into a hard to pass up offer!
As a contractor I definitely feel like I should always be on. Even if I’m not actively applying to roles my profile is open to recruiters on LinkedIn and I’m open to conversations about roles.
I also feel like towards the end of my contract I need to have conversations with my manager about my status. My first ever contract role I was told was contract to hire and was blindsided and told I was being let go when the contract ended. So now my trust with these roles are very low.
I totally agree here, I think the best course of action is to always be open to opportunities. Ideally, you also have more than one client so that you're not just relying on one as your source of income and thus have a little more leeway. It's definitely tough with how volatile the job situation can be, you can't ever really be too sure that a sweet gig will keep on going indefinitely.
Good point - should I consider a part-time role?
