Depends on the firm, there are firms that only have offices in California that offer remote jobs and they offer California wages. I live in LCOL/MCOL and get paid HCOL. DM me if you want something similar, we have employees in Pennsylvania , Florida, Minnesota, Nevada, Texas, Colorado and Arkansas
I think you are coded to the office closest to your location. Not positive though
Think about it. Why would they pay you a HCOL salary if you are living in a small town in Iowa or Alabama?
I'm also based in NYC and have also been wondering this! My recruiter said that a remote-only job doesn't necessarily mean a pay cut compared to NYC salary.

They should definitely pay you NYC wages because NY is one of the few states where you still need to pay state taxes if working remote for a firm based in NY even if you don’t live there. In addition if you’re in a state that has income tax you’ll have to pay taxes there too and you may or may not get the taxes paid in NY as a credit. Also, my firm pays California wages even if you’re remote because they are charging California rates.
You’re coded to the office in state licensed if a CPA
I live in HCOL but want LCOL wages for remote work. LOL
