So just gave my notice at my firm. When I gave notice, it was just devoid of any emotion. Almost like this happens so often and we are used to it. Been a little frosty with co workers. Admittedly we have so many cases, they are probably pissed they have to take on more cases. Curious as to other’s thoughts.

Eh. Just a job. No one is going to be happy about having to do more work.

Any more context to add? Did they have any hints? Are you at a large or small firm? How many cases are you handling and how much notice did you give?

No. I just gave notice. And it was very much like OK. I fully left the notice up to them. They only wanted a week and I insisted on 2 so I didn’t leave colleagues in bad positions.

Let it be validation you’re right to leave. When I left my first firm, my boss acted like a child. Was glad to leave. Just actually gave my notice at my current job yesterday and it was neutral. Whatever!

PARTNERS: two questions —1. If you see an associate has really low hours for the month, do you imagine them chillen on a beach somewhere or do you consider they probably spent most of their days sitting in front of the computer being “available”? 2. If you send an associate a random e-mail on a weekend like “Can you pull X and send to Y”, would you get annoyed if they responded saying they weren’t by a comp or would you consider it reasonable that they wouldn’t be by a comp on a weekend?

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.
