No need. Hold the baby in your lap on the plane. Check your car seat and stroller at the gate.
Cosco Scenera Next. It is our go-to travel car seat. $40 at Wal-Mart, super lightweight, fits over the handles of a carry on bag while rolling through the airport, easy to install in both plane and car. And if anything happens, cheap to replace. We've been using from 6 months til now (will be 3 years next month).
Don’t get one. Keep the kids tied to you. It’s enough. When you’re on the ground use the seat that’s in the hold. It’s better to travel lighter. Believe my experience of 2 kids on scores of long haul flights in the last five years.
No seat. Lap the kid. It's easy. We did it on a 14 hour flight. No problems.
I bought a seat because holding in lap will be inconvenient
Seconding Cosco Scenera (though ours are a few years old and not "Next" as far as I know).
We went through 3 Sceneras. Only our youngest is still using one. At one point though, we were traveling with 3 carseats! We needed to use them at our destinations anyway, so there wasn't an easy alternative to travel light anyway.
Depends how long the flight is?
Thirding the lightweight cosco. We borrow our enoghbors’ every trip
The flight is EWR to ORD. 2.5 hours
Any pro tips on lapping the kid - will we get any sleep too? Going on first 7 hour flight with a 9 month old
Lap. Seat is ridiculous. Also, because of the age they may ask you to lap baby the child if the flight is oversold. I have done 6 hours with a lap infant... it’s fine. At that age, they fall asleep on you
C1. We wrapped our son and also brought a feeding pillow... when we traveled... I went on the plane first with luggage... wife went in near last so our son was not in a fixed position for long (kids like movement). Then nurses during takeoff or bottle and our son was out cold.
OP, how come holding in lap a 5mo for 2.5 hours may be so inconvenient? Just asking the rationale, not judging.
C1, be prepared to not have much sleep, just for the worst case scenario. If you have some, awesome. Try to bring stuff that he/she likes, toys, stuffed animal, etc. Also walk the aisle so he/she can see other people and interact with who wants. Bathroom break to change the diaper at least 2 times during the flight, it’s such an adventure for the little ones. Socialize with the flight personnel, if they like/love babies of course. Nurse/feed him/her when taking off and when landing, and in the middle of the flight since it’s a 7-hour
We've always bought seats for the kids. Both for the room/comfort and the carseats are the safest place for the kids.
Whenever we considered flying as a lap baby, the only real benefit was saving a couple hundred dollars. Yes I know flying is safe, but that was something I wanted to regret if something happened.
Plus, the kid is likely going to be in your or your wife's arms for the overwhelming majority of the flight because of food, changing diapers, needing to be cuddled, etc
