Tax expert 🐠 - I worked in NYC and lived in NJ. W2 shows 2 amounts in box 16 (state wages) - 1 for NY and 1 for NJ, as expected. (cont.)

However, the sum of these state wages in box 16 is almost twice of box 1 (federal wages). What could cause this?

If you are subject to state taxes, box 16 will indicate the total amount of taxable wages for state tax purposes. If you live in NJ and worked in NYC, you need to pay NY taxes for only the days worked there. NJ taxes all the money you earned anywhere.

There will be an entry like TXWGI or NY TX WGI which will tell you the taxable wages for NY state. You can also look at the last paycheck of 2019 to get the amount taxable by NY state. Call EY HR to confirm the amount if you aren’t sure.

Do you pay your credit cards in full every month?

I ask because I’ve let my credit spending get a bit lax since moving and adopting a puppy recently, so I haven’t been paying them off in full every month like I used to (though still well above the minimum payment, and keeping utilization at 30% or under). It got me thinking about how many people adhere to this advice.

my sister died this morning. I posted about her in a past post. Alcohol addiction, liver failure and then it taxed the kidneys too much, she went into cardiac arrest at 9 am and they could not save her. She was 51. Sad day for sure. Feels odd that she is no longer here. I just wish she could have had a better future.

How does contract to hire work? If I’m offered $37/hr on w2 for 3 months and then possibly a permanent position, how much can I expect to get annually as a full time company employee as a BI data analyst II? I have a M.S. and certificates in DA but this will be my first job as DA.
I prefer working for what is offered on contract without negotiating, and then negotiate when I transition into the company itself so I have a better chance of getting the contract position and show my skills.

I have $100k from an annuity invested with Schwab and managed by a brokerage firm. My parents set me all up with this when I got access to the funds at age 21. So I’m not sure of the complete breakdown other than the fact that it’s diversified according to my tolerance for risk

Now, I also have $25k liquid cash I’d like to do something with. Should I just add it to the existing portfolio, or create a separate, self-managed account?
