They say first impression lasts. If my managers or partners in big4 does not see me as strong - is there any chance of changing that? Or should I move on to a another big 4 instead?

It’s not that deep… just do your best. Don’t hop around firms because a partner or manager didn’t like you.

It depends what level you are? For new folks, the first year or two or not big issue as long as you keep learning and improving it’s all good. If you are S2 and trying to change perception, it may help to move but you have got to be careful because you have to work really hard for year or two before you build some good will at new place.

This is pretty accurate; I will say there’s a difference between being your standard A1 level of stupid that no one remembers and being an A1 that is so bad people remember it.

I’ve had new staff who were truly terrible at the job (only a handful, but they existed) and they kept the reputation they’d earned from their first busy season.

Most staff aren’t that bad, though.

If you’ve learned some vital lessons and need a fresh start, go for another big 4. Otherwise stay put.

I had an experience like this at a regional firm, my first year as a senior I was one of the weaker ones and it always felt that reputation hung over my head despite my improvements since nobody took my talks about manager promotion seriously

When my S3 year was finished, I got all meets and exceeds expectations reviews and was denied manager promotion which led me here to Deloitte. I was told I wasn’t ready for manager and I only got exceeds on “easy” jobs.

Despite my experience, I would advise you to stay at PwC since most people would just appreciate improvements and such

I think it was the right choice because I was also unhappy with the work environment and pay at that firm, I didn’t trust the partners to ever promote me too. All the partners and managers went golfing on the weekends so I could never see me fitting in their group

I personally don’t think the hardship of moving is worth it unless you hate PwC, or EY is paying you a lot more money

I think you should speak to your coach and see what steps you need to take to be promoted next year including leading client calls and getting face time with partners etc

Reputations are hard to shake and in my experience are pretty much set in stone on teams (especially larger ones.)

The good thing about B4 is that if you’re in a mid-sized or higher BU there’s enough teams where you can have a second chance.

smart

First impressions are always wrong though. You tend to get an opportunity to establish yourself properly after a while. People talk.

Just get feedback and work on improving them. As long as you are improving and listening, people will see. I've seen an associate whom everyone in the team avoided to work with but now he is a strong manager in the same team.

I'm a first yr attorney at an insurance firm and am in the process of interviewing for an in-house position at a tech company. The position is pretty much generalist, but I get the impression I'd be working mostly on SaaS and partnership transactions. I definitely think I would like the transactional work better, but I am concerned about the long-term earning potential vs. partnership. How common is it to eventually make $400k+ in-house/how difficult is it to transition back to a firm? Thanks!
