This bowl is more active than others so I appreciate the advice...

I really enjoy working for my attorney I should say that!

A major part of me feels like I'm not being managed well.

The role is titled Paralegal but it has so many hats it's hard to focus.

Answering the phones, taking intakes, scheduling, drafting demands, complaints, pleadings, discovery, updating schedules, etc.

What am I ? Paralegal or magician?

Am I failing or am I being mismanaged?

Neither. I think it's a situation of being spread too thin and trying to save the cost of hiring a legal assistant or something. Maybe talk to him and just let him know how you're feeling because you don't want mistakes to start happening and him thinking it's you, when in reality it would be that he's just over utilizing you.

like

That’s the good advice

List all your duties and the time that you spent on each and discuss it with him, you need to data to show him why you’re beyond capacity.

like

You have too much on your plate and they need to hire additional help. They’re not going to know that unless you say so.

Alternatively, if you’re salaried you can request to be paid hourly with OT above 8/40. (Not legal advice, but technically paralegals aren’t going to fall into the exempt bucket anyways, so you should be getting OT).

like

Do you have set hours? Start enforcing them more, and push back on deadlines. Another useful trick is to ask THEM to tell you which items to prioritize in what order.

They’ll let you keep burning the candle at both ends; it’s only when you start pushing back and saying you’re unable to meet a deadline that they take action.

I've been in the bus for decades. You are noticing something. You are running a desk where your boss has piled it on. Many jobs are like this. He's calling you a paralegal but nah....not really. Today's lawyers can title their assistants by many titles. If you do not like your desk....just note it. Usually the desks don't change. Usually if you bring it up...your boss will not listen. He/she may say...hey, thanks for the feeback ....and 6 months go by. Don't stay there unless you want to keep doing what you are doing. Manage your money, your time, get further educated. Don't listen to "we're family" "I'll give you a rise. ..." Just keep working on your cv until you find yourself in a situation you like. In 2001 about is when the "paralegal" title came out-and lawyers today call legal secretaries many different things. Get your ABA rated paralegal license; or a different degree and keep moving. Job life is like this.

I have a BAS in Paralegal Studies from an ABA approved program and I'm waiting on my results from the NALA certification exam for CP. I was worried about a hybrid role but I liked the attorneys so I decided to learn the process of a legal assistant. It gets old doing everything. Often leads to mistakes as well.
