I'd ask for options now. Also, you will be honing all the skills that are useful for a corporate lawyer, so not pigeonholed. (Source: I was mostly a cannabis lawyer for two years and now I do no cannabis work at a regional midsize.)
Ask for equity now.
Not at all. Also, it’s already done. Stick it out.
Thank you!
Sounds like the dream unicorn! It definitely won’t pigeon hole you, but will do the opposite. You’ll be much more marketable after this gig than if you were coming from litigation.
That’s why I started thinking of all the what if’s! I was like wait… this feels a bit unreal. Fingers crossed! Thank you so much.
I’m getting paid about the same salary I was in litigation (a little less but I expected that going backwards). The company is looking to go public and if all goes well, I’d get stock shares and I’d basically also be helping them with branding and marketing (two skills I happened to have). Will this move of mine pigeon-hole me? My other option was to work at a very small boutique transactional firm paying more or less the same. But I enjoy the freedom and the voice I have at this current company.
Sounds like it will do the opposite of pigeon hole you.

I’m in a similar situation although not exactly the same. I recently left a big 4 PA firm doing tax work to join a boutique corporate/tax law firm that specializes in the cannabis industry. The partner there was willing to train and mentor me so it was a good fit since I had no prior law firm experience plus I’m getting to do a lot of corporate work which is an area I wanted to be in but always was worried that I’d pigeonhole myself as a “Cannabis” lawyer since that’s most of the client base.
