Thoughts on transitioning into a career clerk position? I started clerking for a magistrate judge out of law school, and am considering staying on for a few more years. I’m hoping to work at a firm at some point down the line. Are there any downsides to becoming a career clerk in terms of future employment at a firm?

No hard data to back this up but I think it might be hard to land a partner-track associate gig at a biglaw firm after 4+ years of clerking, unless maybe you are open to starting as a first or second year or something. There are so many parts of being a firm litigator that clerks get zero exposure/experience in, and I think firms would be unwilling to bring on a mid/senior associate that has no experience doing basic things like drafting discovery, managing discovery, etc.

Smaller/mid sized law firms might be a different story.

I’ve thought about this and have spoken extensively with my judge’s career law clerk. It’s a career move—you don’t become a career law clerk with the expectation of going to private practice after. Generally people are at firms and transition into the clerk position after getting experience and a taste of the private practice life. That being said, I’ve never heard of anyone doing what you’re suggesting so I can’t help you there. My suggestion would be to talk with career clerks in your courthouse and get their views

Nah, people do it in reverse. They get burned out from working at a BL firm and end up settling into a career clerk position. Seems pretty dead end, which is totally fine if you’re just looking for a 9-5

As the CSC exam costs above 1000 CAD, I wanted to be sure if I need it before investing behind it.

2: PwC - post-merger integration, DDV team (essentially M&A Consulting) - bigger city, always been keen to move

Coming as a Senior in Audit, with recent FDD exposure (2 deals, obviously not much). I was looking for something more than just number crunching, wanting a mix of quant / quali / strategic work. M&A Advisory or a Corp Strategy role is where I'm looking to end up long term.

Thanks in advance!

Ive been practicing in TX for 2-3 years at a big law firm doing mostly bankruptcy work (and some trial) and looking to clerk at a bankruptcy court in SDNY/DDE/EDVA (I am well aware of how great the SDTX judges are but I am set on leaving Texas). Need advice on a specific question!
Interviewed with Chicago court 2 weeks ago; they decide mid-August. Interviewed with DC judge last week; hear from him by this Friday. Chicago said if I need an answer before August, they'd try to make a decision about me sooner.
Should I ask Chicago for an answer? Or should I wait until there's an offer from DC judge? Maybe seems better to withdraw before an offer is made rather than ask for time to think about it/turn down DC? What's proper etiquette?
