Transitioning into M&A Tax soon as an experienced associate from a specialized group within SALT. Anyone have any advice on how to overcome the learning curve (things to brush up on and know) and be able to get off to a running start?

Made a similar move in my career. What’s your educational background like? Do you have an LLM or Masters in Tax? If so, then you may not need to brush up on much from a tax technical standpoint, just try to get staffed on a couple of projects as quickly as possible. You’ll learn best by doing. If you don’t have much background in corporate tax then I’d recommend picking up the Corporate Taxation Examples and Explanations. Logic of Subchapter K for partnership tax if you’ll be working on partnership stuff. If you’re moving to a SALT M&A group then you may just be doing similar stuff to what you did in SALT.

Great! I truly think as soon as you get into the work, it will come fairly easily. There’s always new stuff to learn but that’s part of the fun. M&A tax is a great career move.

Going into salt or fed? read past deliverables, get mentor, read Ginsberg.

Would try to read all prior examples of anything you can. Deliverables, emails on issues, agendas, internal notes sheets to see what people care to document for notes

Hi all - I am looking to move into the world of brand strategy consulting (KPMG has customer consulting division but brand and marketing aren't that strong. Also KPMG UK is the only one of big 4 that has not bought an agency!!). Wanted to hear some advice on the options: go to a boutique (like Lippincott, Prophet) or brand agency? The salary cut for agency is huge though. Are there other options?

So other than money (which is obviously very important) what’s the incentive to make partner? Is it crazy that I just want to do my work and go home to my amazing family without the added pressure of running a business and managing others? I’m only a third year (in a new practice area) so maybe the thought of being competent enough to ever be a partner just seems unrealistic. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Got a 30% salary bump, via an offer for Senior Consultant S&O from Deloitte. Currently underpaid at EY Advisory. I'm MBA and this year is my promotion year at EY for Manager. What to do? Get demoted and move to D? Or counter at EY? Even if EY matches my salary, and promote me to Manager, I will be an EY Manager with a Deloitte SC salary, and probably won't be able to go to D in the future. What do you think? I have built up a good relationship with my Partner and SMs at EY though.

Till date their SAAS product has not found a single buyer. The CEO's girlfriend was the Sales Director whose job was to wear skimpy dresses for business meetings.

Am I understanding utilization rate correctly? It’s chargeable time over total time? Charged 40 hours and had 10 hours non-charge so my utilization is 80%? If so, wouldn’t it benefit me to understate non-charge hours so my utilization is higher since they only really care about chargeable time anyways? Charge 40 hours still but only put 5 hours non-charge for utilization to be 89% instead of 80%? Or am I misunderstanding how utilization works?
