Want to negotiate a raise for the coming year. For reference, 1YOE at my biglaw firm, $47k + overtime, litigation. Some things happened in my personal life, firm agreed to let me go FT remote. I’m grateful for this and don’t want to poke the bear by asking for a significant raise (~10K) but feel I’m being underpaid. Advice?

Your firm might say that you going full time remote is part of your compensation as a result they may not give you a significant raise. Do some research how much you should get paid through pay scale but $10k raise should be a good bump to start.

Thanks, I hadn’t considered that.

First do research on what the market is doing in your area. Then if you can find out, try to see what is being earned for your billed hours. If you can show how much you are earning for the firm in a number, might be easier to argue for more money.

I would be careful though since you only have one years of experience. Most firms will at least give you a cost of living increase yearly

like

For YOE, that does seem like a pretty big ask, but would also depend on where you live. Even with 20 years experience when I asked/received a raise, it was a very small amount and I was billing 2000 hours a year. Good luck!

Consider asking for a COLA based on inflation, too.

I may do this instead of the hard sell, seems like a less aggressive move.

Concentrate on all of the profits you brought the firm. Have that information handy and highlight it.

Additional Posts in Paralegals

Hi all, anyone familiar with Skadden in DC? Looking for any insight!

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.

I am prior military and went to law school. I had a family to take care of while I was a student, hence I went as fast as possible to get to a paycheck, graduating in 2 years, and bypassing the standard summer clerkships. How could I get some experience strictly remote? I am w-2 working as an accountant in healthcare, have passed the bar and am working on my CPA license (studying starts at 3 am, then work FT). I would like to eventually hang a shingle as a tax lawyer, but need experience. TIA!

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

Paralegals: My firm is looking for a paralegal, and I see the job posting advertising the salary as $65-$75k, with benefits. Is this a good salary for a paralegal (Greater LA area)? I’m not the decision maker, but it’s been a few weeks with very few applicants. I’m curious if there’s something hurting the firm in its search.

So I’ve been with a court for a while and honestly the pay sucks compared to what paralegals should be making… the benefits are great though and they match my retirement 100% now that I’m vested at 3 years.I have 4 kids and 1 is getting ready for college. I feel like the benefits are great but I’d rather make more now. I am a previous LEO for 4 years who switched to paralegal so I have my leo retirement. Paralegals here make $28 with no benefits what is a good compromise
