Make sure you have your core work files, get resume together, connect with everyone agency side and client side on LinkedIn, call recruiters immediately, think about healthcare options
Clean out the alcohol fridge
Pull your files, and your email contacts. Find pdfs if finished work and do nothing but that until it’s done.
If anyone - admins, etc - have access to the paid adobe acrobat pro, they can convert those pdf files for you before you leave too. “Oh I need an editable version for repurposing a few slides / images”
If you know the day it will happen, bring in cookies the day before. Just to make them feel bad.
If your kitchen have those good old Quaker instant oatmeal packets, then go wild. You've earned them. They deserve a place in your cupboard.
"has". I don't English well sometimes.
Go back through the goodbye emails of all the people who have left while you were there (and went to places that were hiring). They said “keep in touch” and put their personal email—make sure you have all those and get back in touch asap. “Heeeeey, how’s the new plaaaaace?”
Make facebook friends (not Linked In, who cares about Linked In) with the people you like there, so they can see good stuff youre up to and you can write and say “heeeeey, heard about anything out there?”
Senior Planner - Nobody uses Facebook, that’s why their revenue last year was only 55 billion dollars.
In addition to above -
- update LinkedIn to open for opportunities (on the backend for recruiter searches), set up automatic search alerts
- reach out to mentors and contacts to pre-set up coffee or just check in.
- gently introduce in house exploratory discussions with any of your clients that you’re interested in (“how have you seen people make the shift from agency in house well?”) so that they think of you first before anyone else / before the onslaught of outreach once it happens
- look at / search the historical fishbowl threads for advice on legal counsel and separation details, and how folks have negotiated severance well so you can learn from it
- reach out to any financial advisors you have to give them a heads up and ask if they have any considerations or recommendations for you (life insurance, long term disability, 401k, negotiating severance, etc)
- go through your finances and immediately cut unnecessary and reoccurring expenses
All your work files and the relevant creative work.
Write your friend in management a really nice letter too.
Also support them on the side - these discussions aren’t easy on management, when they’re laying off friends, either.
Research good employment attorneys. Don’t hesitate to lawyer up fast and negotiate your severance right away before everybody else bleeds them dry. Especially at this time of the year.
They are struggling to keep the lights on. They gave me two weeks. There are 7 people left in the office now. No one is lawyering up.
Files files files! And hopefully you’ve made some good connections but ensure you have people’s contact info that basic stuff. I left my now fiancé a note with my number the day I got laid off. :)
Work on a brief transition doc if you can. Nothing toooo thorough, but will make people think highly of you
Sounds like your current office is going to close soon. Spend your days finding new work.
