I’m in the same exact boat. We moved to a much lower cost of living area after living in a very high cost of living city in the east coast and the financial aspect has been nice. But most people here grew up here and have their own friends from childhood and high school. And most have family here as well. I’ve made it my mission to make friends because I’m a very extroverted person. And the average person here is a homebody. But I’ve been able to meet some great friends! Just took a while. Started learning a new sport, and met a few people that way. I’m not shy about getting people’s numbers and asking them to get lunch. I also met people through a board game night that a local coffee shop hosted. And a female focused gym. It takes time. But my advice is to keep investing in meeting people and in existing friendships. Slowly but surely it will happen.
I have a wicked theory about the Midwest: people are more polite than in other places, but they’re not actually friendly. Think “Minnesota nice.” Our experience was that unless they’re transplants, they tend to socialize with people they’ve known their whole lives and aren’t really interested in making new friends. For that reason, not really the easiest place to move to.
