What advice should I give someone who wants to make a career change from marketing/strategy into copywriting?

Is it likely they can break into an agency without doing the whole process of portfolio school, making a book, and applying as an intern/junior?

Doubtful. They’re going to need to show they they can do the job and come up with ideas. I don’t think there’s a shortage of copywriters out there looking for jobs, so I don’t know why any agency would hire someone with no experience or training.

You don’t need to go to portfolio school. I didn’t. If you are currently at an agency, express your desires to a copywriter or ACD and see if you can shadow someone or if they need extra help with something.

And/or find an art director and see if they’d be willing to work together on some spec work or projects. Create a portfolio that showcases creative ideas and executions, even if it is all spec work at first. If you have create hobbies like fiction writing or photography or interviewing randos throw it in as well. Anything that shows you can think outside the box. Just start making stuff!

You definitely need a book, but it doesn’t have to be real client work. You just need to show what you’re capable of creatively

Boutique or big 4?

I'm currently an ops manager at a big 4 in London and received an offer from a small boutique firm with 25-30% pay rise.

I'm also in the process with Accenture but I feel like I'm not sure if I'd jump just for the money but also change in environment.
What type of things would you be asking yourself if you were in my shoes and debating to jump ship?

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

Outside of FAANG, what are good large CA-based tech companies that provide good pay, WLB, and culture? DD has great people and WLB, but pay is low and you’re not given the tools and resources to succeed + truly make an impact. Google and Apple are ideal but need backups. Like is Salesforce still good? A company along those lines.

Considering pivoting into a local MM IB. As my title suggests, my technical skills aren’t as honed as one who has focused on the analysis route. How much of being an Analyst at a smaller IB is technical skill heavy coming into the role? I hold my 7, 66, 24, and am not worried about getting the 79. Any input for how realistic this is? When looking at one particular firm’s career page it doesn’t mention technical skills or modeling once, which led me to believe it may be less important than soft.

What’s a fair expectation for my first raise? Publicly traded co with ~2500 employees. I’ve been doing litigation with the company for almost 3 yrs and have only had a 2% cost of living raise so far. Graduated in 2014. Base comp is $127.5k in the Philly area. I see salaries all over the place in this site and it’s hard to tell whether mine is competitive.

Currently working on a three person team in a larger GC group. I lateraled from a different group that did not pay attorneys on an attorney scale. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. A recruiter reached out with a new role for 2-2.5x more than I currently make doing something similar. I love my company and the people I work with but the money isn’t there. I am ready to transition my Salesmen to a base salary with commission to incentivize new hires & reward my long term guys. My industry is aftermarket auto parts. I am leaning towards a 2% commission but am flexible and just need help in figuring out salaries.

PHEV (specifically, RAV4 Prime) yay/nay?

Expected use case:
Family car
Low mileage (<10-11k / yr)
4-5 days a week expecting less 30 miles per day
Weekends 100-200 miles altogether (occasionally)
Rare road trip use (1x or 2x / yr; <300 miles one way)
Have garage (to charge at home)

Chief Concern: "Best of both worlds" in engineering can mean compromises and complications, which can mean non-resilient/unreliable. But I'm no gearhead, so not sure if I'm making massive incorrect assumptions.

I have a question for the sales managers out there.

What motivated you to pursue a career change from front line sales to managing a team of sales professionals?

I ask, because as I look to the future I am wondering if just staying on the front lines will be more lucrative then entering management.
