If you have no interest in moving up, I'd say no reason to go above and beyond. Would love to hear some partner feedback on this.
You want feedback on whether it’s OK to bill less from the people whose income depends on how much you bill?
Associate #3 is right on. This is a team sport. A little bit of goodwill and kindness goes a long way.
I think it is fine to not bill much more than your minimum as long as you are staying on top of your client work. If you slow down turning deliverables because you’ve hit your hours, you will display a disregard for your clients and the partners who have worked so hard to bring those clients to the firm. It is obvious when this happens, and partners (and sometimes clients) remember. Always finish strong.
Ha! I was shooting more for feedback on goal setting in general, and what's a reasonable expectation. Not every firm has a "bill as much as humanly possible" standard.
Even if you don’t want to make partner (and, believe me, that’s a view I’m beginning to empathize with), billing above the minimum can build goodwill and grease the office political machine a bit, which is useful beyond just enhancing partnership prospects.
At my firm, 60-70% of associates don’t hit their target of 1800, so I’m banking on being safe at or just above that number. 3.5 years in and the firm seems happy with me
My target for my first tier bonus is 2250, which I feel is high, especially since we have reasonable caseloads (ie; not always much to bill on.) I think it is an expectation to bill just around your target at my current firm, because it’s so high even if you gun, it’s tough. I think this expectation is variable depending on what your target is. At my last firm where 1,800 was the target, being just at that was frowned upon.
Helpful data point, thanks. 2250 does seem high.
Partner here. If you’re not billing my minimum (2400 - insurance defense), I’m not expending my political capital on your behalf. Sorry. Work hard and I’ll take great care of you.
