Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

a big agency gives some weight to your resume. Easier to go big to small than small to big. And if you start big and go small, you can always go back to big.
it can be tough to get out of the small agency pigeon hole unless it’s a top ranked small shop.
this is great advice. i started small and am still small, not really by choice.
Big agencies have the resources and clients but it's easy to kinda fall through the cracks. Small agencies are at their smallest "scrappy" meaning you might have to do a few things outside of your job description but people are usually closer. My advice would be to aim for a good mentor or a good account instead of looking at size. Though if you're making a decision solely on size I might lean towards the smaller agency. Make friends, do your best, work on your book. Just learn for now. No one is expecting you to save the world just yet.
I’ll definitely keep this in mind while navigating!
I started off at a small agency and the biggest pro was that I was able to progress extremely quickly since I wasn’t defined to my job role and could work on almost every project.
However, I’m actually starting at a big agency soon on a huge brand because the smaller agency severely lacked in pay, benefits, and general organization in day to day. There are pros and cons to both, and you have to decide what kind of dysfunction/cons you’re willing to put up with🤷🏼♀️ but I also echo the comments above that a good mentor is the most valuable thing you can have at this stage in your career!
Mat Zucker’s book is a good read on this topic. He started scrappy, went really big then eventually glided into a whole different field. It’s called Bronze Meets Silver. Recommended.
Thanks, I’ll check it out!
If I could do it over, I’d do the big agency. Even just one account can make your career. You’ll be wearing “lots of hats” at a smaller shop and while you may win awards here and there, it’ll never be in the Cannes/Clio realm. As the VP said, much easier to go down for then up. Having an Ogilvy, W+K, BBDO, etc. on your resume will open more doors than Cooper & Co. or whatever small shop you’re interviewing with. I’ll say that friendships on the small shop are tighter, but that’s more because are you are all in the gutter together.
Saatchi would be big to me, but I’d say keep going. You know where the big markets are. If you can move to one of those, do it. I started late and my wife had career that she worked too hard to attain to leave, so small market for me. But if you are young and not tied down. Go big
Look for a great CD and a great account is solid advice.
Also, a good big agency is better than a small mediocre one. And vice versa. So try to get into the best agency you can, regardless of size.
That being said, what about 9% TC decrease to start at Saatchi Dallas? Kinda stuck…
I think you learn more/learn quicker at a smaller agency but have more opportunity for career growth at a larger as they have more roles and can transfer or rotate you to another account more easily
