I’d put Telegram above WhatsApp. I’d recommend signal over both but a step up is better than no steps.
WhatsApp has better encryption than Telegram (uses the Signal protocol), but metadata is not encrypted. Signal encrypts everything.
Telegram collects a lot more data of you and stores it plain-text accessible on their servers. All of your (group-)chats, all your contacts, all your attachments (pics, videos, documents: ALL of it) are stored in their cloud where they can do with it what they like. Telegram has a piss poor privacy policy. Where WhatsApp is scrutinised heavily by DPA’s and financial authorities, Telegram is setup in tons of shady countries (tax havens) to hide their cash flow and deny any legal requests and avoid any law enforcement. Telegram could be doing what they like with your data and even making tons of money of it, but we can’t ever know as the cash is pushed through at least 5 shell companies in countries like Belize, Panama and the British Virgin Islands.
So all things considered: no, Telegram is by far NOT more secure and absolutely NOT more privacy friendly than WhatsApp. It collects more data, stores the data insecurely, they don’t guarantee your privacy and it’s impossible to verify and they avoid any legal inspection and challenges.
If you want a WhatsApp alternative that gives you more security and privacy: use Signal. If you switch to Telegram: you’re going to a tool that’s way worse than WhatsApp and can be compared more to Facebook Messenger. WhatsApp is safer than Telegram, absolutely - even whilst it’s a Facebook company. And that says a lot about how bad Telegram really is in terms of privacy protection and security.
We have three pillars: Security, privacy, and trust.
In terms of security, WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption. Telegram doesn't except in "secret chats". Also, the Signal protocol seems more superior than MTProto.
In terms of privacy, both reveal metadata. And their servers know basically all of it.
In terms of trust, that's up to you. Would you trust Facebook or Telegram folks?
Would you trust Facebook or telegram in their implementation of encryption and their incentives in utilizing your metadata?
You have to weigh that and choose. Or you can leave both and use Signal.
There are few differences between both. For Telegram it allows for larger group chats, up to 200,000 members, while WhatsApp limits group chats to 256 members. Telegram allows users to share larger file sizes, up to 2 GB, while WhatsApp has a limit of 100 MB. Both applications offer voice and video calling features, but WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption for these calls, while Telegram does not. Ultimately, the choice between Telegram and WhatsApp depends on your personal preferences and needs. If you prioritize security and large group chats, Telegram may be the better choice for you. If you prioritize end-to-end encryption for all communications and convenience, WhatsApp may be the better choice.
