What are the true effects of a government shutdown? Things dont seem too bad for the average American???

It is impactful. The NY Times had a recently article on the impact of prior shutdowns.

Non essential work is put on hold. This has included the recruitment and training of Air Traffic Controllers. Their article speculates that some of the pressure currently on Air Traffic Control is direct consequence of prior shutdowns.

They also listed other impacts including the last shutdown had an $11Bn impact on the US economy, much of that to the tune of $8Bn was recovered later when deferred work was done but $3Bn was never recovered.

Whatever side of the aisle you are on …. Shutting down the government is not helpful and we need this to be as short as possible.

In 2011 Trump commented on shutdowns and said then “it is the responsibility of the President to get people in the room and hash the differences out”…. Of course then he was knocking President Obama. However…. When the House and Senate are not playing nice in the sandpit the President should be the one to “broker the deal”. Surely this is a good time for the “Art of the deal”.

Anyways…. I hope this is short.

The art of the deal is a farce. He’s running our country into the ground on purpose so that he can take advantage of our deficits (that he created) UGH. Special place in hell…

The effects will be more drama for some people to get upset over and never realize there are many things in life they have no control over.

Those that are well adjusted will ignore the drama and continue to live life and keep moving forward the best they can.

The average American shouldn’t be okay with seeing others struggle

Republicans aren’t even in DC to negotiate. They’re derelict in their duties to govern. They own the senate, house, presidency, scotus- but can’t govern. The art of the deal is a fraud and not a deal maker at all.

This fight is so that those in America who work full time but don’t get health insurance can get it through the ACA marketplace. Premiums are going up significantly, in some cases by 75%. These ppl are getting a break on these high premiums so that buying health insurance doesn’t break the bank. The Republicans are okay w ppl losing healthcare (Medicaid and ACA) as long as their big wealthy friends get their 1 Trillion plus tax breaks and [they] still get their lifetime free health insurance, so what do they care. And, they know it will hit their states harder than the Dem states. 🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s a total betrayal

Medicare and medicaid are paused , as is SNAP. National Parks are closed, food inspections are paused, mostly things that won't have major impacts immediately but get bad if the shutdown persists

likefunny

Medicare and Medicaid are not paused. Neither is snap. Ppl will still get their insurance and snap. Where do you come up with this? New recipients might have to wait to be processed.

We don’t have food inspectors or child product inspectors anymore, those are gone. Doge got rid of everyone in those two categories and more, months ago

Not all ntln parks are closed

Our elected officials are still getting paid, so why should they care?

like

Exactly…the first paychecks which should be withheld are the politicians

Things are not good for many Americans, groceries keep going up , housing prices rising. Many lay offs , raises are non existent because it is an employers market. If the GOP has their way and cuts ACA it’s going to hit the 60-64 year old retirees HARD. They all use ACA aka Obamacare to bridge the gap until Medicare kicks in. Maybe we need to just let it happen to let these MAGA boomers wake up.

like

ACA is super expensive and covers very little.

Many can't afford it so they go without.

Source - someone that used it before and saw no value / couldn't afford it.

It all depends on the FAA who’s already unstaffed. Employees are overworked and beyond stressed; already work overtime as it is. Once FAA employees start calling in sick,
day after day, and on take a 2nd job so they can pay rent/mortgage/food/etc …and, we can’t catch our flights, long lines, cancellations with no time frame of when the next flight is going out- thats when Trump will cave.

This is Trumps 3rd govt shut down. Longest one was 35 days. It was the FAA employees that re opened negotiations by calling in repeatedly day after day

The question…how long will it take this time for these poor employees to start calling in. Remember, they’re not getting paid

likefunny

I received an email that E-verity will be down for any issues that may arise. You will still be required to input your information.

like

True, but is that really the most important downside to a government shutdown?

like

Seeing as the gov only takes actions to screw us over and charge us for it... I doubt anything will be affected..maybe delays on the few who still qualify for "benefits ".. N the people who commit treason to keep their jobs may lose some wages temporarily... But that's it. The gov doesn't work anyway... We need them to permanently shut down so we can replace them with socialism instead... This corporatist society only benefits the elites.

like

Depends on the length…things won’t start to fall apart immediately for people not in government but there will be lagging consequences we won’t appreciate until months or years down the line. Shameful.

like

Government workers are currently working for the promise of a check. That means if there is no budget passed by the end of next week, that will be two weeks of government workers working for free. Everyone from the cashiers on bases, to the machinists turning a wrench on ship, are not getting paid now.

like

Nothing here. I don't depend on govt services.

I bet they could shut down for a year and most would not notice

like

You pay taxes and expect your refund on time. That's the IRS. The FAA which regulates air traffic control, is a government entity. The USDA inspects the meat you eat. You do depend on government services.
