Disagree with Associate 1. Screeners can be done by partners and they may ask questions like why you want to work for the firm. Do your research about the firm and office and be prepared like you would for an interview.
I agree with this response. Screeners are usually done by partners/shareholders.
It’s usually done by a member of the recruiting team (IME), not a lawyer, and they likely will just verify things from your resume. My understanding is it’s basically just making sure, at least at a very high level, that you are who you claim to be on paper and seem somewhat normal.

In my experience (20 years in NYC Biglaw) screeners are often done by attorneys at the firm who are alums or have some relationship to the school where they are interviewing. Sometimes partners, but they are usually too busy unless they are big supporters of their schools.
They already know you have the credentials, so they want to get to know your personality and confirm you are not a dud. Get the name(s) of who you are interviewing with ahead of time if possible and do some recon about them and the firm.
There also might be limits on how many people they can call back from certain schools etc so def beneficial to be knowledgeable and personable.
