Honestly, I’ve found time and time again that it comes down to intrinsic motivation to grow and learn. No candidate is perfect, but the ones willing to step outside of their comfort zone, and have the right drive to take on new challenges, will always outperform the others.
Being real and transparent. Those that says what’s on the interviewers mind and address the elephant in the room. And be honest with what you’re looking to get out of them. People sometimes forget that we’re interviewing them too. Find out if these are the people YOU want to deal with every single day. You will be spending time with them more than your own family.
Yeah, most of the time before you’re entering the room, now video chats; I’d hope we’re all doing our due diligence and homework on what the situation will be. I’m sure everyone is for the most part applying for every type of job regardless of qualifications. That being said, there will be those who are looking for that raise and shooting for the next “big” thing. Not always will your skills latter up to their expectations but that’s on you to speak on your experience. Not enough people talk their shit and speak to their transferable skills. All of this of course depends on per individuals situation.
What I’m pushing at are those jobs that require an x amount years of outrageous experience (or whatever quality of expectation they have) vs reality. And that’s for you to level set that conversation. An example of that are companies asking for interns with 3 years of experience in the industry. And now you’re in the hot seat as a graduate trying to justify why you’re a right fit.

A sense, real or imagined, that they want a job at my place, not any place.
For me, honesty. When I can tell that they aren’t truthful about something in the interview I assume that trend will continue after employment. That said I don’t know that is as important to other creative directors.
Do people actually lie about things in interviews? What sorts of things are they untruthful about?
