I had the GPA, offers from all the big four, and was very involved in college. I started my career at the best big four because that was the cool firm to go to. I liked it there but ended up leaving to join our firm for better culture/work life balance. I quickly learned that people at the national firms are just as smart and as a matter of fact handle far more accounts. We hire top students from top schools all the time and they love it. It’s quite narrow minded to think just because someone didn’t choose the big four they must have not had the GPA etc. People should go where they see themselves fit. For some people that’s the big four and for others it may be a very small firm. One should not judge the intellectual level of another based on “the firm they chose.” :)
I had offers from 3 of the Big 4 but chose to go to BDO because there was more opportunity in a national firm. I made partner in less than 10 years. I do not think that same opportunity exists in the big 4.
i dont think about them.
Yep. Left big4 for smaller due to the cattiness and unearned superiority complexes of those around me.
For associates, they probably didn't have the gpa to go big four.
Worked experienced hires from small firms who turned out great and also worked with experienced hires from big4 who were horrible, simply can’t generalize
I think Big Four is prestigious, but I have to admit from all my offers BDO was my second choice above some of the other B4. I don’t have a negative opinion of the smaller firms
I worked for both as an auditor. A smaller firms audit is a joke compared to big 4. It's also much cheaper for the same reason.
BT1, that’s true. I don’t like the people I work with. Very stuck up attitude.
That’s like saying it’s prestigious to be a #1 seed in the NIT. You’re still missing the Big Dance
This post was either made to create some funny responses or the op is an old fart country club golfing accountant like me. I hope you all realize that tax, audit and risk are going to deteriorate. Technology is taking over. I am retiring next year and I am thankful. The pyramid scheme just needs to hold out for 10 more years. I know the technology folks at my firm are slowly taking over. It is exciting to see a new leg advance so quickly. The tmc team really provides value above and beyond what the other lob's can provide, and before you start barking I worked at Anderson and then KPMG and now RSM. Partner at all 3 so I sort of know what I am talking about.
Anyone who thinks it’s “prestigious” to work for a Big 4 is ignorant. We don’t work in high finance or consulting or law. If you couldn’t get into Big 4, I’d say that’s pretty rough. If you could get in, but chose to go elsewhere, that’s a different story
@KPMG3, it is prestigious for accounting
I think it's all about brand perception. Perception can be everything. Having the big4 on your resume is undoubtedly perceived to be more prestigious than having the regional firms. That being said, I've met some unforgiveably not-so-bright people at Big4, and at the same time, some of the brightest minds at regional firms. You'll find this mix anywhere, and all this post boils down to is an ego trip.
I actively didn't apply for the big 4 because of lifestyle. Instead went regional and merged into RSM later. I feel most of the people I've met that left are down to earth, but there are plenty others who feel they're better for no specified reason.
lol to those who say people who go to regionals because they “couldn’t get in”. I had offers from all big 4 and chose to go to a smaller firm because I liked the people that I met from it much more.
All of you are pretentious as hell. It’s great to have Big 4 on your resume. Also it’s not easy to work at a small firm. I know plenty of private people who outshine Big 4 candidates, they simply didn’t want Big 4. Work hard and stand out, the money will follow.
Who gives a shit what big-4 people think
I have worked in public and private, in big 4, in regional firms, and in small firms. And the smartest accountant I ever worked with was my partner at the small 60 person firm. Laser smart and was probably raking in seven figures if I had to guess. Dumbest person I have ever worked with is the Director I am sitting across from right now at prestigious PwC.
Big 4 firms are not very competitive in recruiting talents here in China. Salaries are so low and workload is huge. Really smart graduates go to MBB consulting or investment banking industry. Or if you are into entrepreneurship, you start your own business.
But the typical way is still big four path for a majority of accounting graduates.
