Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there. https://www.pnas.org/content/117/15/8398

P1 reporting for duty! I really don't know much about the layoffs there other than what I have read here (now you know where I don't work ;)). From what I have seen I feel that the whole thing has been pretty poorly managed. Our firms are businesses that need to be profitable, so unfortunately if the market conditions change dramatically layoffs are inevitable. However they need to be done right. first and foremost because you are dealing with people's lives but also because how you do it will affect the morale of people who remain with he firm as evidenced by the countless threads on the topic... What really surprises me is the fact that this is being going on for so long and now everybody feels like they could be next... Hang in there guys!!!
Advice for OP: Just go to campus recruit anyway. Go find out what info sessions there are in your area and attend. Find a way to get in even if it's not your school. Basically wear a suit and walk in. You're probably thinking: is this guy serious? Yes I am. I was let go before my campus offer even started. I was hired a year ahead of grad by Capgemini so I finished school and went travelling. Having spent way too much (thought hey I would make it back in no time), I came back to no job and ramen noodles. I worked my network that weekend like I have never before. I looked for info sessions and met with people. If you can show you are able to do what they want you to do, no recruiter will turn you away because you have an extra year of experience over other grads as long as you stay humble and can accept a new grad wage and don't act all superior to new grads. Through this method, I got PwC interviews through my network, Deloitte through campus recruiting, other multinational (non-consulting) through online applications and LinkedIn requests. Keep your head up, you initially got hired for a reason. Look for anything you might do differently if you think there's anything contributory to you being let go, but otherwise this shit is pretty random for people above too. Good luck!
Agree with P1 above. I would also add that I'm especially disappointed to the extent they've claimed this is performance-based just so they can say "we're not going through layoffs, we've just been very tough on performance reviews." I think that's a particularly bad message to send. Everyone knows it is a lie, but telling everyone you layoff that it's actually their fault is just kicking them while they're down. And for what? The lie doesn't work, so it doesn't save any face.
Plot twist....both accounts are registered to the same partner
👕
Let's make P1 t-shirts. I'm a fan
Guys... The partners don't reveal the firms they work at. You must be new hehe 😁
Partner 2 is a thing now too!
What if P1 is moritz
So much deception 😱
Hahaha and P2 is Tim Ryan omfg plot twist
They won't respond. Anything they say will be screenshotted and sent to Lauren Weber. No Partner is that dumb.
@P2, it's me
Idk D, they've been pretty candid before because they refuse to tell us which firms they're at
P1 thanks so much for the great response per usual!!! And yes, the feeling of panic is not good. They do the layoffs over the course of multiple weeks, multiple times through the year it's seeming :( Everyone remaining just wants to leave
P1 you are awesome.
Oh wow. They responded. I stand corrected! So not from PwC and Deloitte! 😽
👬
P1/P2, what career advice would you give to those who were let go as a campus hire? In speaking to some of my friends, it seems like it's really an uphill battle for us more so than people let go with years of job experience. We're not allowed to go through campus recruiting, but we also don't have enough experience for "entry" level jobs that require 3 years experience. It's unemployment purgatory 😕
What's the deal with Lauren Weber? Is she on this?
P1 and P2 have always been a thing (no, not like that 😅). Loved their Partner Discussion thread a while back
