I avoid telling them unless they make me. If forced, definitely tell the truth though.
Don't lie, the company will run a background check if/when you get an official offer. If you don't want to answer the question, spin it as "I'm looking for $xxxx" or say "let's make sure the role is a fit, blah blah, we can discuss compensation later"
No D5 they ask for your previous employers pay stubs you should know this.
Actually I take that back it only applies to exp hires.
"I'm certain that you are aware of the pay range for a veteran experienced candidate such as me. Let's focus on the value I will bring."

Background checks return your current salary?
Do you say base or total comp (bonus, 401k match, etc)?
Your personal integrity should prevent you from giving incorrect information about your current salary.
Lie. It is illegal to ask for former salary in MA now. Just tell them the range you are looking for.
Recent exp hire. Never had to provide pay slips for my background check. Only confirmation of work. So lie all you want, if you can justify your ask.
