What do your exit options look like as an investment funds attorney?

This is my field and experience. I think the exit options are pretty good, but you’re right there isn’t that much variety (or opportunity to pivot to a completely different industry).

There are a lot of investment management firms out there, and they all need to have a GC & CCO. They are prevalent in most cities and range in size. There is some consolidation happening due to passive investing / fee compression. But it’s a specialized regulatory field so you’re not typically competing for jobs against general litigation or corporate practice lawyers.

I think work/life balance is somewhat subjective; remember in-house jobs are not billable hours, so an efficient lawyer can actually have a pretty good lifestyle. Yes, some of the big very well known firms have bad reputations, but again there are tons of shops out there particularly in big cities.

Working at the SEC or CFTC would probably be the best in terms of work/life balance, and that experience is desirable by IM shops.

Really appreciate the insight, thanks!

I’m in this field doing formations and like the work and the people but can’t see myself doing it long term. It seems repetitive and administrative at times. Plus it’s limited geographically and I might not want to be in a big city forever. I’d love to move back south eventually. It’s really becoming a large concern of mine because I don’t want to start from scratch and change to a field I might hate.

Seems like you’re somewhat limited to going in-house at a fund or bank, neither of which seem like they would offer much of an improvement in terms of work/life balance

I have an interview for an in house position (only attorney) at a small non-profit focused on conservation easements. I am a transactional associate at a mid sized law firm. The prospect of freedom from the billable hour and contributing to meaningful work are the draws. The cons are that while the salary at the non-profit would only be slightly less than what I am making now, pay increases and opportunities for advancement will be much less than where I am now.
