Mental and physical health check: how's everyone doing? I'm not doing well. Depression and anxiety have set in. I have no idea how I am going to survive this.

Might be too late, but for anyone else out there. Do something BEFORE you spiral. Stop yourself. Just like when you stop yourself from taking another drink. You have to be in control of your thoughts. Think and SPEAK the opposite of what you’re feeling to change your perspective. Your thoughts are not the only truth! If you’re worried about getting laid off, repeat to yourself, XYZ partners appreciate my work. I am valued at my firm. I am a hard worker and integral to the company. The firm will be fine. I will be fine. My job is secure. Your thoughts become words which become action.

I’ve been there. Being positive is just as easy or just as hard as being depressed. It takes work! Do the hard work and stay positive. (I’m not a therapist. Just speaking from my experience.)

I’m not here to commiserate. I would rather help other people (not yourself) see the silver lining and find things we can be grateful for instead of helping people spiral down into more misery and anxiety. You’re clearly looking for people to feel the same way as you. I don’t have a mental illness so we are not at all on the same page and you can completely dismiss what I’m saying. But I have experienced depression and anxiety. In fact, I had an anxiety attack two or three weekends ago. But I managed it by doing all of the things I wrote about above. Yes, for me, it’s a matter of will. If I’m getting anxious because of the news, I will turn off the news apps, the tv, whatever. It is WAY MORE important for my mental health that I turn off the news than to stay up to date on what’s happening around the world politically or otherwise. There are so many things that are simply out of our control. What is getting angry about it going to do? It’s drinking poison expecting the other person (namely, our president) to get sick.

As a real life example, if this thread starts becoming a back and forth disagreement where we will simply never see eye to eye, it’s in my control to let this thread go and move on. I can ignore this thread, delete the app, whatever it is I need to do to manage my emotions and not get angry and upset over a chat-thread.

I know we’re talking about mental illness which I frankly am not qualified to talk about. But just as you would with fitness or finances, it’s best to listen to people who are fit if you want to get fit. People who are wealthy, if you want to become wealthy. And maybe people who are mentally strong and healthy if that’s what you want to become. It is best to find someone who is just one step ahead of you, not light years.

I don’t want to admit this but I used to be a grade A pessimist, and I hated happy people. I didn’t understand them and they irritated me. I thought happy people were born that way, but now that I am a happy person, I’m realizing that’s not true. Happy people make small decisions every day to stay happy. That’s my life story basically. You can get through this. You WILL get through this. You are not alone.

I'm there with you. I'm not OK. I'm nervous about my job, my debt, my family. I'm going through a lot even outside of coronavirus - just lost a family member, my parents are splitting up. Trying to hold it together for my son and husband. I'm not suicidal or anything. But I'm definitely seeing my therapist more often than normal.

Thanks OP. I'm surprised at how much I rely on this app to keep things in perspective and know I'm not alone.

like

You’re not alone! I spent all day yesterday updating the news, which is just feeding my anxiety. It’s helping to not google things and search for dog accounts on IG.

Definitely been doing the same. Had to leave a group chat because it was feeding my anxiety. I've been looking at beagles on Instagram.

OP and A1, are you looking for commiseration or advice?

Appreciate you sharing. Wish I/we could help you out other than by sending positive thoughts and well wishes.

Drink tea. Bubble bath with essential oils. Dark chocolate. Light some of your favorite candles. Pray/meditate. See if your therapist has any openings. Here’s a virtual hug 🤗

Treat your own emotional and mental well-being like a job. If you gave your word to your boss that you would go for two 30-minute walks per day, meditate, write limericks, peruse memorable photos of better times, you would find a way to get it done. So do it for yourself. There’s still a way to go Be creative in taking good care of you.

Hi All,

Was just told to "grow our ESG/CSR" practice at a regional consulting firm, due to my recent grad certification in sustainable biz strategy. Wondering where I should focus us as a services industry for big impact: we have a large product innovation, digital engineering area, and know in the past we've had a lot of lip service to clients and only recorded ESG for their compliance.

Hoping to make a big difference and include CSR/Sust audits and projects beyond for our clients! Any tips?
