What does everyone have for billable hours?

Billables are low this month. Like I have 65 billable hours in so far. I’ve messaged partners over the last week to try and get more cases but there are tons of new associates who were just onboarded and were at a low point for business. I’m freaking out

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

If you do billable work on a given PTO/vacation day, do you still count that day as vacation? Or do you get that vacation day "back"? Or do you only get the part that you billed "back"? (Or some other option.)

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? I’m a first-time prospective lateral likely to get an offer shortly. I just received a lateral questionnaire that requests billable hours, rates, fees collected, etc. for the last three years. Forgive my ignorance but is this normal/standard? Do people actually answer these honestly? One of the reasons I’m leaving my firm is there isn’t enough work in my group so of course my hours are low.

3.5 years out of school, 2400 billable hours last year in TRS and just got promoted. what kind of year end compensation should I be expecting? Bonus and new salary

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?

Looking to leave a govt job for a junior attorney role in a small workers comp defense firm. I have no experience in workers comp. How easy is it to learn the work and make 1850 billable hours? What future opportunities does this experience give?

Have any of you taken "low bono" clients while working at a firm? I want to take on a low bono client or two but not sure who would get the money. This is a contract opportunity through a non profit so I'm assuming a 1099 will be issued. The per hour rate is significantly less than my billable rate. I would (obviously) like the money but my real objective is just getting experience/networking since I recently moved to a new state and don't have clients of my own.

Taking an informal survey how many firms (I) have the junior and midlevel summer associates plan the bulk of the summer events (lunches but also evening events) and (ii) count time spent on the summer program as qualified billable work (in that partners see how much you bill to it on your time sheet)?

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.

(1/2) I started a new job less than a month ago at a large firm with a significant pay increase. I work remotely- which is a special arrangement. They paid for my travel to their headquarters for in-person training. After interacting with my manager and some of the attorneys, I feel like I made a mistake. Manager is demeaning and rude. A bunch of the attorneys dropped not so subtle hints that people who work from home are causing all kinds of problems. I don’t know what to do.

I’m getting messages from recruiters for Sr. Corporate Paralegal roles but all of my experience is in litigation. I have 6 years experience as a paralegal. Should I move forward with this? Not sure if I’m qualified.

I currently work at an international law firm (4 years) and recently accepted an offer to go in house. The main attorney I support did not take the news well and was very angry with me. I feel awful and beaten down as I don’t want to upset anyone but the new role is fully remote and a nice pay bump. Looking for words of encouragement that I did the right thing. I feel awful 😞

For those of you who made the switch to in house/corporate law, what was your experience like? Did you have to take a lower position to gain the experience or were you able to argue that your soft skills were transferable to in house? I’ve been in litigation for 15 years and I’m looking to make the switch. Ultimately, I’d like to get into Legal Ops, but feel getting some in house experience first would be beneficial.

Do small law firms have paralegal managers?

My boss (atty) is so disorganized! I’ve been with him 6 months and he’s having a hard time delegating, sharing info and managing deadlines. I’ve organized the caseload to manage the deadlines. He says he wants me to help with discovery but when I offer to start on one, he says he needs to do it. (Since he might have to present as evidence) When I give him deadlines and ask for the docs he says he’ll get to it. It’s a small 1 man firm, and I’m the first assistant besides his wife. Any advice?

I had a family to take care of while I was a student, hence I went as fast as possible to get to a paycheck, graduating in 2 years, and bypassing the standard summer clerkships. So I’ve been with a court for a while and honestly the pay sucks compared to what paralegals should be making… the benefits are great though and they match my retirement 100% now that I’m vested at 3 years.I have 4 kids and 1 is getting ready for college. I feel like the benefits are great but I’d rather make more now. I am a previous LEO for 4 years who switched to paralegal so I have my leo retirement. Paralegals here make $28 with no benefits what is a good compromise

Currently a paralegal at a small start up financial services company been there for just a little over a year. I wear “multiple hats” but more recently I’ve done a lot of PM work and some BA work. My position title is changing soon but I’m wondering how helpful that would be for wanting to go into PM work at a tech company. Anyone have any career pivot advice?
