What does everyone have for billable hours?

Has anyone made a move from a boutique firm to Big Law, regretted it, stuck it out, and found success? I am in the ‘regretted it’ phase, but it may be culture shock. I started as a legal assistant for a solo practitioner 11 years ago and am now an IP Paralegal. I’ve never had keep track of billable time, and I think that’s one of the biggest adjustments.

Is anyone willing to share billable requirements and salaries for mid-sized, Chicago market?

Does anyone run a business in addition to their firm? I’m a solo and I’m doing pretty well with about 60-70 billable hours a month. Though that leaves a lot of downtime. Curious if anyone has any second businesses that require about 20 hours a week. Not looking for passive income or franchise ideas though.

Do any firms give billable credit for business development? My practice group is particularly BD heavy and I’m trying to convince them to give us billable hours credit

I am a 10 yr lawyer. 7 yrs in my practice area. Little over a year at current firm. Still an associate. Im at large plaintiff firm w/ billable requirements. I do mass/class cases and hold a couple leadership positions (these were competitive to get). What should salary be and when should I make partner. I’ll add I work remote and pretty autonomously. Little contact with partners or anyone at my firm.

When should I start to get worried that corporate is so slow? Have only billed 230 hours for the year so far and it doesn’t seem like things are picking up soon so getting nervous since my firm has a billable hours minimum requirement.

Does anyone know about associate compensation at the regional Atlantic Canada firms? The the big ones have all been posting job ads for associates in the 3-5 year range. Any insight on salary and billable targets?

This might sound like a crazy question but never having worked in public before: Billable hours - if you’re very efficient at your job, do you stretch out the time and work slower to get to your billable hours or do you safe the client the money. In a Situation where you don’t have other projects to work on. Tell me the ins and outs of working billable hours for a complete newbie.

If you don’t have 8 hours of billable time a day, do you leave as is or do you fill in the gap with non-billable work? While I am in the office, I don’t always get the billable amount since I don’t have enough work. Seems like a waste of time to enter non-billable time just to fill in the gap but I also don’t want them to think I am not there and slacking off.

Is it strange that anyone at my firm (associates/partners) can look up where any lawyer is on billable time for the month? I’m a third year lateral, and my old firm didn’t do that. Is that normal? Feels invasive

I have a recruiter showing me a general overview of FTI Consulting saying that compensation would consist of base salary + monthly qualified billables + 10% to 20% annual bonus. I’m a first-time prospective lateral likely to get an offer shortly. I just received a lateral questionnaire that requests billable hours, rates, fees collected, etc. for the last three years. Forgive my ignorance but is this normal/standard? Do people actually answer these honestly? One of the reasons I’m leaving my firm is there isn’t enough work in my group so of course my hours are low.

In my offer letter relocation assistance is mentioned as supposed to be utilised in first 2 months, but there is no business need of relocating at this point of time, will they provide relocation if I relocate at later date.

For anyone who has really enjoyed adjusting, what did you also really enjoy after that? I want to move up in my career but I have found a lot of enjoyment adjusting. I just know that can’t be it forever because I need to learn, grow and make more money. And a break from adjusting 🤣

Moving to SF in a few weeks - any recommendations on areas to live? I’ve been looking at Russian Hill, Marina, Nob Hill. Are they safe? Should I look farther away and not live in the city? Would love any advice as I don’t know anyone living there now.

I've been at Capgemini for only 3 months as a Senior Consultant but I've been reached out by a recruiter from Accenture for a position that is similar what I'm currently in (SAP BRIM). I always felt that Accenture has a better grasp in the SAP industry and would actually have better opportunities for growth. I haven't really felt that Capgemini was the best move for me so far for this (outside of the money which was the primary reason why I jumped to them). Should I reach out for an interview?

So I’ve been with a court for a while and honestly the pay sucks compared to what paralegals should be making… the benefits are great though and they match my retirement 100% now that I’m vested at 3 years.I have 4 kids and 1 is getting ready for college. I feel like the benefits are great but I’d rather make more now. I am a previous LEO for 4 years who switched to paralegal so I have my leo retirement. Paralegals here make $28 with no benefits what is a good compromise

Does imposter syndrome ever go away?! My firm does regular performance reviews and my stomach is in knots every time even though I always get “exceeds expectations” in every category and my senior attorney always writes the nicest notes, but I always get so much anxiety about it. Any tips for a paralegal who wants to transition to an in-house position? I have 2.5 years of para experience and a decade of admin experience. I have my BA, AS, and AAS which are all related to the paralegal field, and various applicable certificates. I'm also working on my master's in management with a concentration in agency administration. All job postings I see want you to have a certain amount of in-house experience.

Starting a new job at a Big Law firm in two weeks, any advice on how to set boundaries?

How do I switch gears from family law (3 YOE fam law litigation in northeast PA) to literally anything else? It feels like family law is in its own field but I don't see myself being able to make as much moving forward in fam law.. I would love to go corporate or even just to another state but I am constantly seeing ads looking for fam law paralegals with experience in that state.

For context I have a bachelors as well as a paralegal certificate- just finished the latter in May.

Why do paralegals get paid less than attorneys and we do a good amount of their work except going to court and meeting with clients ?
