Certs really don’t matter for these types of roles. Do product focused engagements if you can and focus on those in your resume.
That said, the odds are that no matter what you do, you’re probably not going to get a PM role—even in those APM/RPM types of programs. There just aren’t that many spots and there are tons and tons of applicants just like you with a consulting background. Google APM, for instance, focuses on undergrad recruiting primarily and if I’m not mistaken, it only has ~40 spots total—most of which are taken by HYPSM/top eng school candidates. In my friend’s APM class, maybe one or two people had external experience? Facebook RPM is also now shifting to be more of a URM recruitment program than a general job opp these days too—so if you’re not an underrepresented minority, I wouldn’t hold my breath. The much easier path is to do an adjacent role (e.g., PMM, Product Analyst, Strategy, BizDev) and get promoted into PM after a year or two.
Totally agree! Just its a little detrimental to say these programs will favor a URM who applies if you’re not 100% certain of that bc it undermines their efforts in landing the role.
And OP, if you have any Qs about landing an APM/RPM position, feel free to DM. I’ve received a few offers and can help.
Most APM programs only accept current students or if you’re within 1 year of your graduation date so just keep that in mind if you’re considering those programs.
