Ten minorities can't change entrenched cultural hiring practices. If there's someone overseeing hiring and firing and making sure amorphous statements about "culture fit" don't create homogenous spaces then why not?
It means:
1) the CEO is not responsible for diversity in setting the vision
2) the COO is not responsible for diversity in the day to day operations
3) the CFO is not responsible for diversity as resources are funded
I interview at Mccann NY a few years ago and the chief diversity officer was a late 40s White woman from westchester. So who really knows what it is
Because you need somebody aware enough to see diversity as something more than hiring a few people based on their skin color. Someone who understands diversity of though and experience as well, and a 23-year old raised on a steady diet of social media statements probably isn’t the best suited for considering all angles.
Literally my first question when I started here....
Remember when companies has chief digital officers? It sounds dumb now, but back then it was to make sure someone had the clout to make rapid changes, and that their career depended upon it. They led "digital transformation." 5 years later, this seems stupid. Companies are digital. But these people sped the process. Most companies no longer have that role, as it isn't needed, the work is done. But the clout and high level attention to changing culture was necessary.
It's an excuse to say that the agency is working with diversity issues. But they don't really. The mostly talk in press and at conferences. Smoke and mirrors.
I’m the only POC in my whole creative department, so whatever we can do to make the team more diverse I’m all for it.
It's only a 6 figure salary if you're a woman :p
Theoretically, someone who develops, plans, spearheads, leads, oversees, implements diversity policies and procedures strategically and long-term to ensure diversity is created and also maintained and improved upon. Not sure in reality how much of that they do, but it's a start given the glaring omission of this as a core hr practice that needs actual nurturing. I wouldn't shit on it automatically though I understand the skepticism.
@A1 but does that role truly require a c-suite title? It just sounds like companies attempting to make up for their awkwardly awful hiring practices and habits that they can’t seem to break. I understand the intent and appreciate it, but it also feels unnatural and a relic of a role.
Thanks s is one of the dumbest posts I’ve seen in a long time. You recommend tokenism. Jeeesh.
So what is a company supposed to do?
People complain that there isn't enough diversity (and they're right). So holding companies create positions designed to facilitate greater awareness and dialogue, and people complain that this step has been taken.
And if I had a buck for every straight white person who complains the organization isn't diverse enough, but never seems to hire diverse people on their own team, I could pay the salaries of a few hundred diverse hires.
The CDO is there to track and remind you about the value of diversity. She isn't there as a substitute for you making decisions that facilitate better hiring of overlooked minorities (of all types). That's YOUR job.
No they are very valuable. They are there to make sure the companies don't get sued for being the racist chauvinist pigs they really are.
Yes that will solve it. Just hire a few people of color so we can check it off the list. Diversity goes beyond race. Go educate yourself. Everyone company needs one and they need a team.
Maybe same reason you got to take those diversity trainings. Maybe because agencies are scary white. Op, just maybe the cdo should give your position to a poc?
It's so odd to me that people can read (recent) history books on how badly race has been handled by our Caucasian led society. Yet when statements like this are said, they don't notice they sound just like white people who saw no need for these changes in the 40s, 50s, 60s...etc. it's like 40year olds saying that young music of today sucks. Like, how do you not notice that you're THAT person continuing the same bullshit?
Definitely not 7 figures
White people bad. Diversity good! What is diversity? It's diverse! Except for white people, they bad. Are your ideas good? Who cares if you're 'diverse'! (You realize how insulting it could be if you're valued on your ethnicity over the quality of your idea - that's WAY racist BTW)
Yeah, let's legislate a new way of thinking. Because that always works. 🤦♂️🤦♀️
@SPM1 - do you even comprehension? TBWA2 was saying that none of the 10 people they’d interviewed seemed to be from disadvantaged backgrounds. Reset your racism alert back to Defcon 5 and follow what’s actually being said.
