You can check all the numbers off the DFAS site. If you become an officer or commissioned (requires Bachelor’s degree) then you get paid more. Depending on your job, if you deploy or go on more frequent missions, you can earn allowances from that. Also, if you get relocated overseas, there are other non-taxable allowances that you would receive.
Hi there, I think you may be asking too broad a question without providing details on your background. The max ish salary for enlisted is vastly different from an officer.
You can find all pay charts yourself on DFAS website
Remember to check rates with dependents. You get paid differently if you have children vs without.
most jobs within the active duty enlisted world pay the same, with relatively minor differences based on incentives for specific jobs and duty locations. ultimately if you’re only doing one enlistment on a 4-year contract, you’ll be spending the bulk of your time as an E-3. if you’re on a 6-year contract, then you’ll spend most of your time at the E-4 pay grade which is the same for all military members regardless of job (again, except for a few special duties and duty location).
in addition to your base military pay, you’ll also receive a tax-free allowance for living IF you live off of the base/installation. that is calculated based on your location and the cost of living there. this is further augmented based on your pay grade and your number of dependents. but ALL of this is public knowledge and easy to calculate. try a free “military pay calculator”. all in all as an E-4 with dependents living in off base in VA, you’d take home about $4000 per month after taxes.
Sorry, but no one comes into the military to get rich 🙂. There are other benefits that supplement your income… free medical/dental for you and next to free for dependents. COLA if you are stationed overseas, housing allowance, space-a travel, post 9/11 GI Bill which can be transferred to dependents too, etc. If you are looking to get to the very top of the pyramid, it is going to take a “few” years of service and a lot of dedication. Good luck on your decision!
