As cutthroat as it is, I feel like I've been prepared better than anywhere else the past 3 years out of undergrad. It can suck at times but it is like tough love, it will ultimately make you a better professional.
Have worked at Deloitte, McKinsey, and BCG. I'd say Deloitte is by far the most toxically competitive. McK/BCG folks are highly self-motivated (read insecure) but also very collaborative -- especially at BCG (in my experience)
Yeah definitely a YMMV case. OP - I personally like DD culture. D13 - what region are you staffed out of if you don't mind me asking? I'm referring to HC NYC in particular
@d1 LA office. Love my HC fam!
Director1, how come?
No ^
Thank you @Director1.
Which firm are you with now? What level did you leave deloitte at if you don't mind sharing?
I've already experienced how competitive it is and as someone who has worked at another big four prior to this, I can definitely feel the difference in intensity and attitudes. My mindset changed from 'hey I'm going to get promoted fast' to 'I hope I don't get fired or laid off for at least 2 years before I can go back to b school'
Plus had an offer I couldn't refuse 🤑
Deloitte
BCG2, great 😭
No problem - are you experienced or campus hire? How long on the ground? Will try to focus my insight if possible.
Thank you Manager S&O,
Experienced hire from another consulting firm, 6 weeks into the firm and landed my first project. Came in at the consultant level. Have received some criticism on my PPTs first week but by second week they got better (after downloading time saver + other templates).
Also received some criticism after a meeting with the client (essentially I got too technical/solution focused rather than keeping it high level value prop meeting)...other responsibilities so far have included meeting minutes, process flow diagrams, other miscellaneous PPT decks. The other consultant on the project has been with the firm for 3 years already and he's been given a lot more responsibility in terms of leading a few client sessions and managing all the requirements. I'm worried I'm already off to a not so positive start on the first project.
@C felt the same at my first project coming in as an experienced hire, coming from gov contracting. Luckily it was a small project so had a lot of responsibility right away but also a lot of helpful criticism. Pressure was on, which has helped in my current project and future projects.
Deloitte is the worst ... my old SVP in private co was a partner there, he jumped over to us then hired his mistress - also a Deloitte partner (he helped her make partner by funneling her our business). I had to report to her... hooker RAd me and eventually every non Deloitte person she could. (Weird music here) I hate Deloitte!!!
Damn so consulting ain't exclusive at all 😂

What are some really good boutiques in your opinion @strategy&
Depends. Some people like the boutiques that try to compete with the big boys. ATK for example. Some people think of OW as a boutique but if you consider them in the context of M&M companies then... sort of. It's an interesting middle ground closer to a boutique than not. The closest thing to old Booz now is LEK, less than 1k employees. Then there are great industry specific boutiques. For example. Altman Vilandrie is the king of TMT. Only BCG has a better TMT practice. So it depends what you're looking for.
Some say LEK but if you're not doing growth strategy, you're slogging out DDs. ATK isn't bad I hear but don't know much. Not OW. The thing is, strategy boutiques are having trouble as standalones. I hear Marakon does a lot. RB in Europe. Their Chicago office is a joke. Maybe ask in a separate post about political or economic boutiques?
My experience at Deloitte has been great. Yes, at times I've worked a lot of hours. But get on a good year-long project, find an honest and trustworthy manager, and make him/her look good by the work you do. It can get competitive with ratings, but outside of that I've found plenty of support and friendship.
@D12, most people don't go into consulting to do the same thing for a year though.
ey3 will probably say transaction services, which is not true, Parthenon is. Or anything else said is just wrong
