In no particular order advice for years 1-3: Likable. Above average billables. Team player. Care about your work product. Responsiveness. I’m a 4th year at a large IP boutique.
To make partner, you need business.
It’ll be hard as a junior to get any business. Watch the people doing well, ask questions about business development, etc.
Even with years of experience, building a book is hard. Try to lay the foundation now rather than starting from scratch in year 7.
build the relationships you will need to develop business later. Developing a client can take years, so if you need business in year 7, you should be networking and volunteering with relevant organizations in years 3-4.
Switch to lit
Build relationships. Do good work. People that you work with at one client or are junior members of a team at one client may learn to like you and when they move up the ladder or find a new job they call you several years down the road. This is also true of your associate group. I have several friends I worked with in the first 5 years out of law school that are clients or referral sources now. Keep in touch with people.
