If we’ve brought you in a for an interview it means I’ve already looked at your work, your site and your resume. And been briefed by our recruiters. The interview is more of a chemistry check than anything. It never hurts to be prepared though I guess.
Lol a printed resume? For a creative?
SAD 1 - do you think it would be fine to just bring a laptop with my resume and book on it? Lol
I went to an interview for a top level position and the first thing the dopey ECD is was ask to see my work. Never looked at anything. Barely knew who I was. After the interview, I called recruiter and told her even if I was offered the job, forget it. Respect is a two way street. You’re looking for senior talent and don’t take the 15 minutes to look up who you’re meeting with, you’re not interested in me
Laptop and some printed resumes. More often than not they aren't needed but you want to be prepared when the need does arise
Print out a few resumes as well. The more prepared and professional you look, the better
Laptop on and ready to go.
Resume printed. Yes they saw your work beforehand but want to hear you speak to it. They are judging preparedness, character, presentation, and assessing your skill level.
I had interviewed a candidate that merely brought himself to the interview. No laptop, no resume. Nothing. Ironically, they hired him even though I voted otherwise. He did not work out in the end (shocking). And as an added insult kept his work laptop and sold it.
The point of this is that the little things matter. Being prepared shows you are responsible and considerate of others.
If an agency judges creatives for not printing their resume, I wouldn’t want to work there anyway
As someone who hired a bunch of folks as well as did his share of being interviewed I would definitely recommend you bring your laptop and be ready to show them your book on it (let’s say it’s 2018 and your book is of course online). Often you don’t really remember the book anymore or there might be someone who hasn’t bothered going through it. Also as a CD you need to ask what role you played on the team and/or what the context is etc.
More often than not I was asked to show my book in person/asked to be talked through their book
It depends whether they called you or you called them
Bring it all. Most of the time the CD or senior creatives interviewing you have looked at too many books over the previous weeks and won’t specifically remember your work. Bring a tablet or laptop to show it. Resumes just in case. If you have a few printed pieces that you are particularly proud of, bring those as well and pull them out if there is interest in it
Yes
Seems this is split right down the middle. Interesting.
Yes AD2.
It shows that you are considerate of their time and are prepared. It also gives a creative a brief moment to flex typography and layout skills proven by their success on a printed page (more than one page/one side and you have failed).
Let’s hear your logic for not printing one, besides saving a tree that has already been cut down.
I never thought of bringing a printed resume but I think it's a good idea. My resume is embarrassingly lacking in content (I just list previous agencies/brands I've worked on).
Question for CDs: how many of you send paper thank you notes (after an interview) and do you think they make you look profesh or old fashioned?
I have both ready but only bring out if needed
Wow. All you youngsters not bring printed resumes. A resume is yet another medium to show your style and attention to detail. Did you pay attention to size and scale of type? Did you choose a nice paper stock. Maybe it’s old fashioned but maybe it’ll make you stand out. I’ve never been “briefed” for an interview and have often refreshed myself on who I’m meeting with 3 minutes before I meet them. Sometimes it’s nice to be handed a resume when I haven’t had a chance to print it myself. It’s nice to write notes on it. And as others said, it shows your thoughtfulness and preparedness
