What type of salary cut should I expect if I leave for industry? Currently making the post-MBA salary at BCG, but I got promoted directly from undergrad. Do I need an MBA to get paid well in industry?

I don't have an MBA but I got promoted to the role that people with an MBA get hired for. Double my starting salary.

like

I've seen actual data on this for Bain, and immediate salary on leaving tends to be more or less the same across all levels (not sure if those figures included bonus, profit share, etc. though), but the upward trajectory does go down substantially. Don't know if a direct promote is treated differently from an MBA, but, at least for MBB, I doubt it.

like

MBB exits don't go to normal paths, even pre MBA. Google Charles Aris compensation study to get the best capture of aggregate exit data. I've seen strong performers get significantly higher than these averages. Recruiters know what we make after receiving the comp bump from going directly to our "post-MBA" role and we typically expect a pretty compelling offer to leave. I'm going PE Ops vs Industry - but bump was about 25%

like

What do you mean you got "promoted" from undergrad. You mean hired directly from undergrad?

like

Interesting... that imaginary line does not really exist in industry. With <5 years of experience and the hiring/recruiting background I was in previously (speaking within FS specifically) I'd think can expect to land in a low level management role at best but be prepared to pay your dues if you have not worked in a "front lines" type of role. You could potentially get in on a good rotational program but those are usually reserved for recent grads and I don't recommend them - they are sometimes ill-viewed, kind of like commissioned officers vs enlisted in the military. Since that's the case, I would expect quite a cut at first. Rotation or not, an expected range for you might be 65-80, but with a much healthier bonus % than you're used to. You can move up very quickly, but you have to earn your keep first, and your progression will feel slower than you're used to in consulting.

like

So you just got promoted which is the same by title but not the same when they view internal. Um an MBA would help, you don't need it but with 2-3 years of experience your massive pay day probably isn't here yet

like

Exact same situation here OP, and I've wondered the same thing. Since we technically only have ~three years of experience I find it hard to believe many industry jobs would match our current salary. Question is, how big is the pay cut and are the trade offs worth the cut?

like

Associate1 - you're obviously very out of touch with MBB recruiting value in the market. None of this input is aligned with either the data I've seen, or what I've observed from experiences in my network

like

I'm promoting this question!

like

Yep! Promoted straight from the post-undergrad role to the post-MBA role

like

I'm sure recruiters would love to talk your ear off about it though if you respond to one of the emails Charles Aris sends every other day.

like

I did that actually and she said it was incredibly unlikely I would match my current total expected 2017 compensation (base + bonus + profit sharing) which is about $203k. I graduated in 2014.

like

Basically you'll make over going PE, under (by a little bit) going industry. Leaving at 3-4 year helps for industry in my view

like

No one else thinks making 200K 3 years out of school seems unrealistic?

like

No it isn't unrealistic with MBB base increase structure and their bonus/profit-sharing. Should have been at MBB.

like

The lifestyle is pretty intense, but yes we are paid well after getting promoted.

like

And no, you shouldn't "need" an MBA - worth much less in industry than your actual experience.

At BCG you get promoted into the post-MBA role after 2 years out of undergrad

Sorry... not following. What does that actually mean? Do you have an MBA or not? What is "post-MBA" role? Lol

I mean... let's put it this way. At most banks and companies in the sector, your best bet as a rock star college grad is around 65-70 (+bonus) for the most competitive analyst/rotation programs out there. You can expect 5-10% increase *at best* from there but it's much more strongly tied to company performance and department performance than I've seen at K. Bad year, you may get nothing. Nothing meaning literally 0. Good year you could pull a 15-20% bonus if you're in a revenue producing group. I worked at 2 of the top 5 US banks and 1 broker dealer. For a total of 12 years, 3 of which was as a comp analyst. These numbers I'm giving you are slightly inflated to account for the fact that I left that role 5 years ago. Should hold accurate.
