A coworker once said everyone has that one coworker that when they give up on the company, you give up too

When the little things that used to annoy you a little, annoy you a lot.
Pro
When my promotion to mid got cancelled due to covid only for a white coworker with a lesser output to get promoted a week later. Agency didn’t lose clients or anything, if anything we were making more work. They just had the perfect excuse to squeeze more out of us.
Joke’s on them, though, I got the promotion and a 50% raise a few months later.

When my boss said “you’re no longer working here”
Me too!
When working until 11 every night was the norm and not the exception
I have this metric: the more I snooze the alarm in the morning, the more I need a change
When I was told to stop saying no and being so negative and frustrated when the account and project teams kept allocating me at 200% capacity.
This ☝️. It’s not being negative when you’re dying and ask for support, anyone that gaslights you otherwise is a crap human
They turned off my email.
When you’re not happy.
The great thing about being human (and not a tree, per sé) is that you can remove yourself from miserable environments; it can be truly life-changing.

Rising Star
When I got bored as hell.
Kept winning new business, but staff was getting cut.
“We have to let you go.”
I looked in the mirror and noticed that I was an old white male.
lots of this happening at Performics. A red flag is a red flag.
The year there were no raises, promotions, 401k match or xmas bonuses. But they fired people and made me pick up their work.
When they made the dude with less experience and a shittier book who had only ever worked at that one agency my boss because it was a giant boys club. That’s when
I was transitioned into a speciality I didn’t want and it was frustrating work with no reward.
2.5 years no payrise, lots of external awards for clients, lots of internal praise, scaling / managing large client spend watching very incompetent people given resource and pay rises.
Effectively agencies will be a mixture of bias and incompetence over who gets rewarded and who doesn’t.
As I said, if you’re in this industry, you should interview annually whether you look to move on or stay.
Every year people are getting pay rises but it’s not fairly or evenly distributed.
When I was honest about changes that needed to be made to a webpage design, and then was told that I had humiliated the senior creative. I would have to apologize or lose my job. I apologized with a smile. Three months later, the bounce rate was >99% and I was onto a better job.
